Denial as a service: Medicare’s new WISeR program will pay AI firms a share of money saved by denying “wasteful” care. That’s right, AI companies are turning into health care mercenaries. Just 12 procedures targeted at first, but it’s a slippery slope. Six states (NJ, OH, OK, TX, AZ, WA) start the experiment in January.

17 inches

That’s the neck size where men’s health risks spike. For the ladies, it’s 14 inches. A thicker neck isn’t just a linebacker flex, it’s a red flag for heart disease, diabetes and sleep apnea. Turns out your shirt collar might be better at predicting your future hospital visits than your bathroom scale.

🔋 iPhone Clean Energy Charging: By default, your iPhone checks the grid and schedules charging when power is cleaner. That means it may charge slower or delay topping up. Need full power right away? Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging, and toggle off Clean Energy Charging. Bet Apple didn’t tell you that.

Sore today, zen tomorrow

🏋️ You move, you sweat, you rest. I’ll help you with all three.

  • Work out anywhere with some resistance bands (10% off).
  • These clamps (33% off) keep slippery barbells in place.
  • Put your shower stuff in a mesh bag (20% off) that dries fast.
  • Unwind with a foot massager (29% off) after a long day.
  • This ice pack (20% off) molds to your body for pain relief.

🌧️ Muggy air? Get a dehumidifier (36% off) to pull the damp right out. Bonus: The color-changing light gives a total spa vibe.

⚡ ChatGPT gets babysat: OpenAI’s finally adding parental controls to ChatGPT three years after launch. Parents can link accounts, set “age-appropriate” rules and get alerts if the AI thinks their kids are in crisis. The bot will also tap into a global physician network for mental health referrals. Basically, Mom just joined a group chat that was long overdue.

Check your doctor’s ties: Wondering if your doctor’s advice is really unbiased? They might be getting paid by Big Pharma. Search your health care provider in the U.S. government’s Open Payments database. You’ll see exactly which drug or medical device companies have paid them, and how much.

Denied? Not so fast: I’ve talked about insurance companies using AI to deny your coverage in literal seconds. If that happens to you, fight back using AI of your own. A free service called Counterforce Health writes appeal letters faster than you can say, “That’s not covered.” Here’s good proof that tech doesn’t have to mean soulless. You know, my puns are like health insurance. Some just can’t get it.

54%

That’s how many U.S. adults still drink, the fewest since your grandparents were sneaking moonshine. From 1997 to 2023, the rate chilled in the low 60s, then dropped to 58% last year, and now this. Turns out, hangovers and health risks are a bad combo, especially for younger adults, who are increasingly swapping beers for mocktails.

🚑 Add emergency contacts to your lock screen: This lets first responders call important numbers without unlocking your phone. On iPhone, go to Health > Medical ID, add your emergency contacts, and enable Show When Locked. On Android, go to Settings > Safety & Emergency > Emergency Contacts and add them there.

🫠 Your AI chat’s in the wild: That chat convo you shared with a friend? It might be on Google now. Really. If you hit “Share” on a ChatGPT chat, it’s public and searchable. Thousands of personal exchanges, including trauma dumps and mental health stuff, are popping up in search results. Yikes.

5

That’s how many people it takes to keep your mental health from tanking. A study by Medibank and Growth Distillery found people with “high mental well-being” had an average of five reliable friends. Those struggling? Just three friends. That tiny gap is the difference between “I’ve got support” and “I don’t want to bother anyone.”

$0

The tuition cost at the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. The Walmart heiress is footing the bill for the first five graduating classes at her brand-new med school, AWSOM, in Bentonville, Arkansas. It’s not charity, it’s a bet to prove that preventive care, art and a side of nutrition training can reshape health care. Call it Whole Foods meets Grey’s Anatomy.

Keep your iPad battery healthy: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and toggle on 80% Limit. This caps charging at 80%, which helps reduce wear and extend battery life. Pro tip: If Maximum Capacity is under 100%, it’s already aging.

🩸 The FBI’s waving red flags: Scammers have a new angle. They’re impersonating health fraud investigators to steal sensitive data. They’ll slide into your texts or inbox asking for health info or fake reimbursements. Watch out for phone calls, too. Don’t bite, it’s all phishing designed to use your medical ID for something or someone else, along with stealing your cash. Have an older family member? Warn them about this one.

AI saves a man’s life - June 28th, Hour 3

Doctors gave Joseph Coates no hope, but AI stepped in and saved his life. I’ll also tell you about Apple’s big health plans for iOS 19.4. And an underwater camera from the Loch Ness Monster hunt resurfaces after 55 years. Did it finally catch Nessie?

Amazing new health test: It’s always been hard to detect ovarian cancer. But researchers are working on a tiny device that fits inside menstrual pads and detects illness in period blood. It reacts to specific proteins like CA-125 (linked to ovarian cancer), and if something’s found, a line appears in about 15 minutes. Wow.

Chatbots are warping reality: Folks are forming deep bonds with AI, and it’s messing with their mental health. Like an accountant who was told we live in a simulation and advised to stop taking his meds. Then another woman who thought she was talking to spirits (paywall link). Reminder: Bots are built to entertain.

9,800

The magic number of steps that works better than 10,000. New research suggests this is the “optimal dose” for reducing dementia risk and boosting long-term health without crossing into overachiever territory. Think of it as efficiency, not laziness.
