Welcome to a tech-tastic Sunday, friend. Ever feel your phone buzz, pull it out, and thereâs no notification? Youâre not imagining things. Itâs called âphantom vibration syndrome,â or PVS. Studies show up to 90% of people who use smartphones regularly experience PVS. You see, our brains get so conditioned to expect notifications that sometimes, they create the sensation, even when our phones are silent or turned off. Fascinating, isnât it? đ By popular request: Todayâs newsletter is packed with gifts for all your favorite people at every price point. I hope this helps you finish up your shopping ⌠or, at least, get started. Sick of shopping? KIM KOMANDO TODAYGuy Kawasaki on being remarkableGuy Kawasaki hosts the “Remarkable People” podcast (yep, I was on it because he said I fit that category!). He was one of the original marketers behind the Apple Macintosh computer, and I asked him some great questions, including a few about Elon Musk. Tap or click below to play this podcast now. |
WEB WATERCOOLERShopping scams are getting nastier: One victim in Maryland was tricked into paying a fake $0.99 âredelivery feeâ and ended up losing $400. USPS and other shipping companies wonât add a shipping charge after the fact. These scams usually come via text, so watch out. Attn., Windows Insiders: Microsoftâs Recall feature is a privacy nightmare. Even after a backlash forced changes, Recall still captures info like credit cards and Social Security numbers. Thatâs with the âsensitive info filterâ on. Microsoft says theyâre fixing it. Again. đ Hit or MIS: Itâs a tough job market for computer science grads. The tech hiring boom has gone bust, with mass layoffs and fewer openings. Some opt for a Master of Management Information Systems (MIS) degree to ride out the downturn. These jobs pay roughly $112,000 a year for masterâs grads, compared to $72,000 annually with only a bachelorâs degree. Iâd rather see you get a cybersecurity or AI degree. Winning over Americans one check at a time: An Indiana mom raked in $95,000 in five months promoting fashion, beauty and kidsâ products on TikTok. Unlike other social platforms with steeper entry requirements, TikTok Shop lets folks with just 1,000 followers start monetizing. Is it worth it for how much data they collect? Up to you. Hereâs the signup link. It kills your brain cells: Glyphosate, the most used weed killer in the world, has been linked to diseases like Alzheimerâs. Itâs in Roundup and so many other brands. A new study from Arizona State University (my alma mater!) says the chemical leads to long-term damage, even with brief exposures. The EPAâs stance? Low levels are safe. đ¤ New year, new (higher) prices: YouTube TV subscriptions are getting a $10 price hike to $82.99 per month starting in January. Itâs the second increase in less than a year. At launch in 2017, YouTube TV was just $34.99 monthly. Oof, thatâs a 137% jump. They say the decision wasnât made âlightlyâ (with dollar signs in their eyes). It’s time to decide if you really need it. đ¸ Another flop for Harry and Meghan: Their $100 million Netflix deal is on shaky ground. âPolo,â their new series focusing on the world of elite equestrian sports, has been ridiculed by critics as “unintentionally hilarious.” I tried to watch it, but it was so bad. The couple never did the animated series Netflix signed for, either. Meghan’s reputation as being extremely difficult to work with isnât helping matters, and her cooking show is going up in smoke, too. PSA: Working for a living takes up your whole day. |

TECH LIFE UPGRADESđ Consistency is key: Make sure your business name is consistent across Yelp, Google and every other online directory. Even small differences (like âCo.â instead of âCompanyâ) can confuse search engines and hurt your SEO rankings. Want more small-biz smarts? Get on the list for my free small-biz newsletter now. đ Friendly reminder: Browser extensions lose support and change developers. Take a minute to review whatâs installed and ditch anything you donât use. On Chrome, tap the three dots near your profile icon, hover over Extensions, then select Manage Extensions. On Safari, go to Preferences > Extensions. đ Whatâs the score? In the Alexa app, open Settings > Sports Update. Add your teams (youâll find all major American sports leagues). Now, say, âAlexa, give me my sports updateâ for scores and schedule info. Debt freedom starts in 30 seconds: If youâre struggling, stressed out or worried about money, do something about it today. Get a free debt analysis with a plan* to pay down your credit cards, personal loans, collections or medical bills. This company is legit. $40 to Sharon for cocktails: Unless you change your settings, anyone with the Venmo app can see all your contacts. Go to Privacy settings > Friends list > Private. While youâre there, turn off âAppear in other usersâ friendsâ lists.â This is important! đ¤šââď¸ Free audio editing software: Get the one we use at the olâ Komando Radio Ranch right here. It works great if youâre digitizing music on cassettes and LPs, podcasting or just editing audio for whatever reason. |
SUNDAY TO-DO LISTWatch: One of the 100 best flicks available totally free on YouTube. 𤎠Admit it: You havenât cleaned out your garbage disposal in a long time. I use this to make it easy. Impress: The family with homemade popovers. I bet these smell so good. Mix: Two scoops of collagen* into your coffee or smoothie. I do this every morning to keep my skin, bones and joints happy. (Psst, itâs 45% off and youâll get free shipping with my link.) đ¤ Ask: Me your questions. Iâm a business owner, tech expert and mom. Iâve been helping people navigate tech and life for over 20 years. Iâm here for you, too. |
UNTIL NEXT TIME …An oldie but a goodie: Iâll never forget these predictions of what humans could look like in 2100 because of tech. You have to see it. Iâm praying we never end up with claws and a second eyelid. Shudder. Speaking of ⌠Whatâs the difference between a cat and a comma? A cat has claws at the end of its paws and a commaâs a pause at the end of a clause. (I know youâre gonna use that one.) đŤ Shop: I like to scan Amazonâs bestsellers for gift inspiration. Itâs a good way to find those gifts on everyoneâs wish lists, adults and kids alike. Another day in the books! If you laughed or learned something new, help me grow this newsletter and tell one person to subscribe. Just one! Would you do that for me? That would be amazing, just like you! â Kim |
