🗣️ How to practice difficult conversations with ChatGPT Voice
ChatGPT’s GPT-Live voice mode lets you rehearse negotiations, interviews and awkward conversations with natural interruptions. Here’s how to start, the prompt to use and what happens to your audio.

⏱️ The 60-second setup
First, make sure your ChatGPT on mobile is updated to the latest version.
GPT-Live in the ChatGPT app
- Go to Settings > Voice > tap Live, then use the Voice button.
- Tap the Voice button icon (not the microphone, that’s for transcription).
- Describe the scenario and tell ChatGPT who it should play.
- Talk naturally, including interruptions when you want to push back.
GPT-Live with CarPlay
- Connect your iPhone to CarPlay before you begin driving.
- Open ChatGPT Voice and tap the microphone icon.
- Begin the role-play, then keep your attention on the road and use voice only.
This makes ChatGPT’s voice feature so much more useful for rehearsing conversations with actual stakes. You don’t have to wait for the bot to finish its little spiel before you want to talk.
Ask it to play a cable company employee before you request a discount. Practice an interview answer and have it interrupt with follow-up questions. Run through an apology before you deliver the real one and discover, privately, that your opening line sounds like courtroom testimony.
You get the benefits of saying the words out loud, including the uncomfortable parts, without involving another human or spending 40 minutes on hold.

Pretend you’re a cable retention agent. I’m trying to negotiate a $30 discount on my bill. Push back twice before agreeing. Keep your answers realistic and brief. When we’re done, tell me where my argument was weakest and give me one stronger sentence to use on the real call.
Swap cable retention agent for hiring manager, insurance representative or anyone else you need to face.
Be specific about the outcome you want and how much resistance ChatGPT should give you. Otherwise, it may fold immediately, which is lovely for morale but useless as practice.
⚠️ The catch: ChatGPT Plus users get up to three hours of GPT-Live per day. Free users receive limited access through a smaller, less capable model.
OpenAI says it doesn’t use voice audio to train its models by default unless you choose to share recordings. Audio may be retained for 30 days, and deleting the chat starts the process.
Transcripts follow your ChatGPT data controls, so don’t rehearse with account numbers, Social Security numbers or anybody else’s private information.
