Use AI to plan your next vacation

I’m going to Europe soon, and planning my trip was a breeze. Yes, really! AI did a big chunk of the work for me — and it can help you plan your next getaway, too. Here are a few ways to turn AI into your travel agent. For this, let’s stick with using the big bots:

📶 Your internet plan is expensive: Call your ISP and ask to talk to a “retention specialist.” They’re the folks who can cut you the best deal. Heads-up: Most promos are only valid for a year, so you’ll have to renegotiate then.

The future is hybrid

Volvo just dropped its all-electric plan, joining other carmakers moving away from EVs. With limited charging stations and a focus on hybrids, the push for electric cars is losing steam.

✈️ U.S. air control systems are outdated: They won’t be modernized until 2030 at the earliest. Why the delay? Because some systems are over 40 years old, making parts hard to find. Add in FAA management issues (slow to start new projects, poor oversight and planning), and we’re running on seriously old tech. Reassuring, right?

$2.2 billion

How much movie theater chains are spending to lure us back. It’s not just better screens (though there are plans for 21,000 of those), beefed-up sound systems and comfier seats. You may see pickleball courts, arcades, ziplines and bowling alleys at a theater near you … all of which will be grossly overpriced.

Hope you don’t have any 23andMe stock: The DNA testing company peaked at a $6 billion valuation. It’s now down 99%, and CEO Anne Wojcicki wants to take the company private. When they heard that plan, the entire board of directors said, “See ya.” Anne has until Oct. 3 to comply with Nasdaq’s qualifications or the company will be delisted.

33 days

How long the average home cook spends planning Thanksgiving. That’s two weeks each on the guest list and menu planning, plus three days of food prep and cooking. Get going! You don’t want to make Thanksgiving a cluster-pluck.

The broken promise of 'ad-free' TV

Streaming was supposed to be ad-free, but now ads are sneaking into paid plans, and free ones are packed with them. What happened? Plus, is Facebook listening through your phone? I’ll cover that, how tech is making us lonelier, and the latest AI threat.

🚨 Alexa wants you to vote a certain way: When asked why you should vote for Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Amazon Alexa said, “I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or a specific candidate.” But for Kamala Harris, it returned a list of answers, including, “[S]he is a female of color with a comprehensive plan to address racial injustice and inequality throughout the country.” Amazon says it was a glitch and they’ve since fixed it. Makes you wonder where else Big Tech is spewing their employees’ opinions.

🛰️ Bound to happen, lunar or later: Starlink’s new plan to stop scalpers from buying their cheaper satellites and hawking them elsewhere? An “outside region fee.” If you buy a satellite internet kit (standard or mini) from one region and activate it in another, expect an extra charge of up to $300.

🧑‍🚀 All suited up with no space to go: Two NASA astronauts are stranded on the ISS because of ship thruster issues. One return plan was for the pair to hitch a ride on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. Bad news: Their spacesuits aren’t compatible. Even if they were, the Dragon capsule is full with no room to plug in.

The couple is back with a new plan to protect kids from social media — but is it just an attention grab? Here’s the scoop.

Here VR, folks: Microsoft ordered a few hundred thousand micro-OLED displays for its next-gen VR headset. The plan is a device that makes watching movies and playing games more immersive. If Microsoft prices it under $500, they might have something. The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro was a complete bust.

📅 Cheaper than a personal assistant: ChatGPT can plan your day for you. Tell the AI your top three priorities, appointments or commitments and how long a task typically takes, then ask it to create a schedule. Bam, a bulleted list, scheduled to the minute.

Two down, eight to go: Neuralink successfully implanted another brain chip into a human patient. No word on when its second trial recipient had surgery, but Elon Musk says it’s “gone extremely well.” The plan is to have eight more brain chip implants completed this year. I interviewed the first recipient, Noland. Amazing guy!
