Your email is the master key to your money. Build a secret vault inbox in 5 minutes
Every bank password reset lands in one inbox, which most of us use for coupons and newsletters. Here’s the free fix that cuts crooks off at the door.
🤯 WOW! You can have the strongest bank password on Earth, and it won’t matter. All a crook needs is your email. Click “Forgot password?” and your bank sends the keys straight to the inbox where you also gave access to a pizza coupon site. One hacked inbox can unlock your checking, retirement and medical accounts at once.
The Short Version: Give your money its own secret email address that nobody else ever sees. Steps below.

Here’s what you need to know. Your bank doesn’t really care about your password. It cares about your inbox. That’s where every “Forgot password?” link lands.
So if a crook gets into the same address you gave Target, a sketchy coupon site and 47 newsletters, they can reset your Chase login in minutes. (Seriously.)
About 6 million Americans had an account taken over in 2025, an 18% jump in a year. Email was the most hijacked account that wasn’t a bank account. Such takeovers cost Americans more than $15 billion last year. That’s your cash walking out the door.
The fix is cheap and boring, which is exactly why it works: a vault email. It’s a second address used only for money and medical accounts. Nobody else knows it exists, so nobody can phish it.
🔐 Build your vault in 5 minutes
Tested by me, on my own gear. Your device, model and software can shuffle the menus around, so if something’s not where I say, look one tap over. It’s hiding, not gone.
🤖 Here’s the Gmail route:
- Open the Gmail app and tap your profile picture > Add another account > Google > Create account > For my personal use. Think random words plus numbers.
- Go to Google Account > Security > 2-Step Verification. Choose a passkey or an authenticator app, not text messages. (SIM swappers love texts.)
🍎 Love Apple Mail?
- Add the new account on your iPhone at Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account > Google.
- On a Mac, open Mail and choose Mail > Add Account.
🏦 Move your money in
Log in to each of these and swap in the vault address under profile or security settings:
- Your bank, credit cards and PayPal
- Retirement, brokerage and crypto accounts
- Health insurance and patient portals
- Your cell carrier (port-out fraud starts here)
- IRS, Social Security and the three credit bureaus
Then follow the house rules. Never type the vault address on a sign-up form. Never forward it to your main inbox. Never use it to reply to anyone. Check it once a week, like a safe deposit box.
FYI, this won’t stop data breaches. It keeps a breach of your everyday email from turning into a breach of your bank account. Lock it down.
My email password has been hacked. That’s the third time I’ve had to rename the cat.
