Since 1964, when the media publishes or broadcasts false information about “public figures,” they can’t be sued for libel unless it can be proven that they knew the story was false. (Or if they show “reckless disregard” for verifying the story.) This unique protection has allowed false and sensationalistic reporting, especially on the internet
