How is real Vermont maple syrup made?

You can’t have pancakes without maple syrup! A popular staple of breakfasts everywhere, the condiment is beloved in the northern hemisphere for its sweet taste and sticky consistency. But where does syrup come from? As it turns out, it’s maple tree sap — but there’s much more to syrup-making than sticking a hose into a tree.
