How did the U.S. government keep a town of 75,000 secret?

In Tennessee, there’s a town called Oak Ridge that doesn’t exist. Well, it actually does exist, but no one knew about it. During WWII, many residents were asked to leave town, and the workers that came in their place were told nothing about what they were doing.
