“The Professor and the Madman” is adapted from the 1998 book, “The Surgeon of Crowthorne,” and tells the true story of James Murray, the editor of the first Oxford English Dictionary in the mid-1800s.
Mel Gibson plays Murray, a professor who oversees the committee that’s responsible for compiling the entries for the dictionary. Sean Penn plays William Chester Minor, a surgeon who’s undergoing treatment in a criminal lunatic asylum (because it was OK to call it that in the 1880s). Minor, who was institutionalized for committing murder, submitted more than 10,000 entries for the dictionary.
The 2019 film is available for rent on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play and Vudu.
