You never know what’s going to be a big hit on television. Some ideas that seem to be a “can’t miss,” like a series based on the cash cow Marvel movie franchise (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), can stall out. Others were just a bad idea all around — “My Mother the Car,” anyone?
But sometimes an idea that seems very simple, almost simplistic, catches on with viewers and carves out its own niche.
Such is the case with “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” starring Jerry Seinfeld and a series of guest stars that include more than just comedians.
The Seinfeld of old
If “Seinfeld” sometimes grated on you, “Comedians” is a return to the warm, friendly Seinfeld of stand-up comedy. Seinfeld picks up his guest star in a vintage car, then they have great conversations as they go to a coffee shop or restaurant, where the fun continues. The show is a bite-sized pleasure, lasting from around 15 to 25 minutes.
The 10th season of “Comedians” has just debuted on Netflix and features Zach Galifianakis, Dave Chappelle, Dana Carvey, Alec Baldwin and the last appearance of the late Jerry Lewis.
And if you’re a car person, you’ll see a 1972 Volkswagen Thing, a 1977 Toyota Land Cruiser, a 1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super and more classic cars.
What you also need if you stream
Streaming TV is the best. You don’t have to pay high cable bills, you can pick your channels, and there are a lot of great shows streaming now.
But if you stream, you’re probably still going to want to pick up your local network channels for news and live sports – and all the niche digital TV stations that have been added over the air.
