Best site for free family tree and people searches

Where do we come from? This is a powerful question, which lures many of us into the farthest branches of our family trees. Some of us want to fill in the blanks or learn what happened to distant relatives. Others want to rekindle the traditions of the past, track down an ancestral village, or discover the origins of their names.

The internet overflows with ancestry sites, and even if information is scarce, you can order a kit that will analyze your genetic makeup. But most of these services cost money, and if you find an error or missing links, there’s not much you can do about it.

The wiki-based website is free and open-sourced.

All you have to do is register, and you can sift through the lineages in search of your family’s origins. Better yet, WeRelate crowdsources information, so you can add names and dates to the ever-expanding database.

You don’t often find an online organization with such pure intentions, but WeRelate is rare.

It was created in 2005 by the Foundation for On-Line Genealogy, WeRelate has a partnership with the Allen County Public Library in Indiana. One of the site’s most exciting developments was a collaboration with the University of South Florida’s Africana Heritage Project, which focuses on slave genealogies.

Perhaps the most powerful feature is WeRelate’s ability to crowdsource photos and source documents of historic personages. So if you’ve ever wondered what great-grandma looked like, and your cousin has a daguerreotype portrait of her as a young woman, you could scan the old photograph and post it online.

WeRelate doesn’t include every single person who passed through Ellis Island, so you might find a lot of holes in its archives. But WeRelate claims to have pages for more than 2 million people and families, which is a pretty good start for a website that’s free to access and relies on its users to keep the information current.
