How does it work?
The noise-detection feature was first released in the iOS 14 update. It allows you to detect different sound variations, including sirens, doorbells, barking dogs, a crying baby and more.
Even a flood detecting option allows you to hear if water has been left running somewhere in your house or is flooding into your home. This handy feature can help you save money from purchasing other devices that do the same thing.
While it doesn’t fully replace a home security system, it is a helpful addition to whatever technology you are currently using. It’s also beneficial for those who have reduced hearing.
How to use Apple’s noise-detection feature
You can turn on the noise-detection feature for specific sounds or all 14 different options at once, depending on what you want to use the feature for. Just follow these steps:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
- Tap Sound Recognition.
- Slide the toggle next to Sound Recognition to the right to enable it.
- Tap Sounds, then turn on the sounds you want iPhone to recognize.
Once the feature is on, you’ll get notified by tone and vibration when your iPhone detects any of the sounds:
- Fire alarm.
- Siren.
- Smoke alarm.
- Cat.
- Dog.
- Appliances.
- Car horn.
- Doorbell.
- Door Knock.
- Glass breaking.
- Kettle.
- Water running.
- Baby crying.
- Coughing.
- Shouting.
Bonus Tip: You can quickly turn this feature off in Control Center. Here’s how:
- Open Settings > Control Center, then tap the plus next to Sound Recognition.
- To activate the feature from Control Center, open Control Center, then tap the control.
