Having choices is great. But there is something about having too many choices, particularly if you’re looking to buy certain electronics. That can give you a headache.

Even if you have a favorite brand, it may be offering choices in the same category. It can get pretty bewildering.

I present to you Exhibit A: Amazon’s Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K. Which should you buy or upgrade to?

There is no easy answer, because it really depends on your budget, whether you always have to get the latest of anything, or whether you’re satisfied with what you have. Let's compare all three devices so you know what the differences are.

Fire TV Stick

What the Fire TV Stick has going for it is that it is less expensive, about $39. With that said, the Stick isn’t just no-frills, it’s low-tech. It’s maximum resolution is 1080p, its operating system is two generations behind and it only has 1GB of RAM.

Fire TV Stick 4K

The latest version of Fire TV Stick 4K was released in 2017 and retails at about $49. For your money you get a device that runs on the most up-to-date Android software, handles 4K resolution, has 8GB of storage and 2GB of RAM.

Fire TV Cube

For $119, with the Fire TV Cube, you get almost the exact same internal hardware as Fire TV Stick 4K. If the Fire TV Stick 4K is slow, you’ll see no improvement with the Cube. But one thing it does have that Fire TV doesn’t is a built-in Alexa and an internal speaker, so you can give hands-free commands. And, while it has nothing to do with performance, the Cube is pretty cool looking.

So there you have it. If your TV’s resolution maxes out at 1080p, stick with the Stick. If you just love the hands-free options and look of the Cube, upgrade from Fire TV. But hey, do what you want. I’m not your mom.

Bonus: Save money with bundle

If you want similar functionality of a Fire TV Cube but want to save a few bucks, purchase a bundle with the Fire TV Stick 4K and Echo Dot. Amazon sells the bundle for $79.98. This lets you use your voice to "wake" Alexa instead of pushing a button on the remote and have hands-free voice control of your Fire TV.

Should you upgrade your macOS to Mojave now?

Apple rolls out major updates for macOS every year. The latest is Mojave, which arrived in fall 2018. But not everyone jumped on the update the moment it came out. If you haven’t yet upgraded to Mojave, it’s time to take a close look at whether or not you should do it now.
