Netflix is the biggest movie and television streaming service ever. With multiple original series and new movies being added all the time, it continues to grow. I don't know if there is a single person out there who does not have at least one degree of separation from someone with access to the incredibly popular streaming service.
2017 has been a great year for Netflix so we have put a list together of Netflix's most popular movies and series of the year.
From Netflix originals to box office hits, this is the must-watch list from Netflix of 2017:
1. The Crown
Director Peter Morgan's lavish drama is in its third epic season. Each season covers a different period of time following the high royalty life of Queen Elizabeth II. Claire Foy's performance as the Queen has been nominated for multiple best actress Screen Actors Guild awards, and the show itself has received over 13 nominations for Emmy awards, including Outstanding Drama Series.
2. Stranger Things
"Stranger Things" is an American science-fiction created by the Duffer Brothers. It has been praised for its generous and felicitous use of 1980's popular culture references. With themes inspired by many popular video games and anime and aesthetics informed from the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter and Stephen King, this brilliant series will have a little something for everyone.
3. Arrested Development
Arrested development has to be one of the wittiest comedy shows ever made. Jason Bateman stars as the solid coherent voice of reason in a family full of quirky, often self absorbed and socially inept personalities that are trying to put the family's business back together after their father gets arrested. You know that feeling when you get a hilarious inside joke that no one else gets? This show nails that feeling over and over. Nearly every line of dialogue is a reference or cleverly written joke, and the almost constant barrage of comedy never seems to get old. This brilliant series will have you clutching you side in laughter while you re-watch it over and over to try and pick up every little gag.
When a money laundering scheme with a Mexican drug cartel goes wrong, a middle-aged accountant, played by Jason Bateman (a completely different role than above), must move his family from the heart of Chicago to the rural beauty of the Ozark wilderness. Adjusting to the new environment while attempting to hide millions in cash from bloodthirsty drug dealers, this new serious drama will force this fractured family to come together closer than ever.
Chronicling the elaborate and high tension rise and fall of Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, brilliantly played by Wagner Moura, this exciting Netflix original series follows two DEA agents who risk their lives trying to stymie the plague of drugs and violence that infests the beautiful South American countryside.
Originally released in 1982, this science fiction fantasy directed by Steven Spielberg became an instant classic. Inspired by an imaginary friend created by Spielberg after his parents' divorce in the 1960s, this film has widely been considered one of the greatest films of all time.
It follows a troubled child as he summons the courage to save a stranded extra-terrestrial and help it return to its home planet. This classic is a must-see for people of all ages.
You're locked in a room for 15 years. Nothing to do but exercise and plot revenge on the man who killed your wife, kidnapped your daughter, and stole your freedom. What happens when you get out? This epic action-drama echoes a Greek tragedy showcasing how revenge can fully consume one's heart and become the single impulse that keeps a man moving forward, past any obstacle.
It is also an incredibly impressive feat of cinematography and features one of the most famous action sequences of all time, aka "The Hallway Scene."
8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
This fun, family action adventure sci-fi spectacular is the second hilarious entry in the series of superhero films inspired by Marvel comics. Unlikely hero and generally relatable guy Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, takes on the role of Star-Lord, the leader of a famous galactic protection force, as he searches the galaxy for answers to his mysterious past.
This is a great family movie that will have you laughing and your kids quoting their favorite scenes for days, maybe weeks.
9. The Jungle Book
The classic coming of age tale of a boy raised in the jungle has been recreated in 2016 for a new generation of viewers. Experience this exciting live-action family film inspired by the original Disney 1967 animated film. This 2016 remake was met with huge commercial success grossing over $966 million in 2016, making it the 35th highest grossing film of all time.
If you want to relive the classic or introduce a younger generation to the famous jungle book story, the live action 2016 film is a great source.
10. V for Vendetta
In a dystopian future and fascist ruled Great Britain, an unlikely heroine, played by Natalie Portman, encounters a revolution in a Guy Fawkes mask. The stranger, calling himself V, is intent on bringing down those responsible for the atrocities leading Britain into the political shape that it is in.
As the innocent girl learns more about the mysterious man and the violently covered up backstory of her country, she begins to understand that you may be able to kill a man, but an idea like freedom lives on in the minds of generations to come.
Editor's Pick: Planet Earth
Looking for a relaxing, mind-blowing, and cinematic marvel? "Planet Earth" is one of the best nature documentaries of all time. With cutting-edge camera technology, the series takes viewers everywhere from the plains of Africa following a cheetah hunting its prey, to the back of a worker ant while it goes about its daily gathering duties for the sake of the colony.
The footage, soundtrack, and narration combine exquisitely to encompass themes of danger, excitement, romance, and even grief that help viewers identify with the natural world and appreciate our fascinating planet in ways that would dumbfound even the most imaginative mind.
How can you tell if someone is secretly using your Netflix account?
Remember when cable TV was something people could steal? Like a pesky neighbor who splits your line and runs into their house. It was all the rage not so long ago and could lead to hefty fines. Now, with the advent of streaming services, people are stealing passwords to use your accounts.
