Craigslist can be a great place to sell electronics, event tickets, and lots of other stuff you don't want. But it also seems to be a place where scammers lurk. Worse than that, killers are also using the site to find their next victim.
Many people have decided that buying and selling things via Facebook is more convenient. According to Mary Ku, Facebook's director of product management, 450 million people visit buying and selling groups on Facebook each month. The popular social media site decided to make local commerce even easier.
Facebook Marketplace operates very similarly to Craiglist. You can list things you want to get rid of and search for items you'd like to purchase.
So, how do you use it? Before you begin, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, Facebook Marketplace isn't available to everyone yet. If you don't see the buttons we're about to show you, it may not be available in your area. Second, Facebook is still working out some of the bugs. Shortly after its launch, some inappropriate postings appeared for sale, so for now, keep this feature out of the hands of children. And finally, to see this feature, you'll need to upgrade your Apple/Android app to the most current version.
OK, let's begin!
Open the Facebook app and tap the icon at the bottom of the screen that looks like a little store front.
Tap the camera icon that says, "Sell."
Select images of the item you'd like to sell from your Camera Roll.
Label the items you're selling.
Add a brief description.
Name your price (Note: You do not need to add a decimal. For example, $160 versus $160.00).
Enter your ZIP code to identify your general location (the app does not ask for your specific address).
Choose the best category for your item.
That's it! After completing these steps, your item will be available on Facebook Marketplace. Messages will appear within the app as you receive inquiries from interested buyers.
One advantage of using Facebook Marketplace is that you don't have to enter your private email account or phone number to sell your item. However, interested buyers can see the basic information of your Facebook profile. That's why you need to check out this article on the details Facebook asks for that you should never give.
You should also run a privacy check on your account to make sure your account is locked down from prying eyes. Click here and we'll walk you through the process.
