Here's how to stop Google from collecting data about you

Does the idea of Google tracking your every move creep you out? One reason Google tracks you is to provide you with targeted ads. This is when ads for an online store you shop at, or for a product you've looked at recently, seem to follow you around the internet. Click here to find out how to take control of Google's targeted ads.

But that's not the only reason your data is being collected. Google says that your searches and activity from other Google services are saved to your Google Account so you can get better search results and suggestions. This is controlled by Google's Web & App Activity feature.

Google does say that you are in control of what is saved and that you can delete your past searches and activity at any time. Or, you can turn off the Web & App Activity feature altogether.

Some Google products that collect your information are Chrome, Google Maps, and YouTube search history. Here are the steps to stop Google from collecting your data:

Turning off Web & App Activity

Here are the steps to turn off Google's Web & App Activity feature on both a PC and Mac computer:

  • Open the Google myactivity page - Click this link to go to the myactivity page.
  • Click on the three dots - They will be found in the upper right-hand corner. 3 dots
  • Select Activity controls
  • Disable Web & App Activity - Slide the switch next to the Web & App Activity to the left. This turns it off. web and app
  • Click Pause - Once you slide the button shown above to the left, a warning page will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to pause Web & App Activity. Click pause to confirm.pause

Turning off Web & App Activity on Android

Here are the steps to turn off Web & App Activity if you are using an Android tablet or phone:

  • Depending on your gadget, open Google settings in one of these places: 1. Settings app 2. Google Settings
  • Tap Personal info & privacy >> Activity controls >> Web & App Activity >> turn the switch off

Turning off Web & App Activity on iOS

Here are the steps to turn off Web & App Activity on an iPad or iPhone:

  • Visit the Activity controls page - Sign into your Google Account if it asks you to.
  • Turn off the Web & App Activity switch

Note: Some browsers and devices may have more settings that affect how this activity is saved.
