Renting a car? These apps let you zip through the line

Renting a car? These apps let you zip through the line

While you're sitting at your gate waiting to board your plane, you're daydreaming about cruising around in the sweet convertible you've reserved online. The time you've spent selecting your preferences in advance will save time at the kiosk later. Instead of going over your options with an agent, he or she will simply pull up your reservation on the computer and hand you the keys after you've signed a few papers.

Your daydream is interrupted by a news report about a tropical storm headed toward your destination. You can't let the storm stop you from traveling during your trip so you need to switch out your convertible for a more practical SUV.

With a mobile app, you can easily make the switch before your flight takes off. Major car rental companies such as Avis, Enterprise, Budget and Hertz, have mobile apps so that you can change and cancel your reservations on the go. Click each car rental name to see which devices carry the app.

They also have many other great features to keep the rental process convenient. With Avis and Enterprise, you can use their apps to contact roadside assistance. The Hertz app frequently tells you about upcoming rental deals.

All of these apps let you search for nearby rental locations and save your information so that you can make a reservation even quicker the next time. If you really like a previous rental but you forgot the name of the car, you can check your past rental history too. Just be careful about using the Bluetooth feature in your rental cars. You may want to erase phone information from the Bluetooth system so that future drivers don't have access to your phone contacts.
