Easily password protect Word documents

We take steps to ensure our computers are safer everyday. But if you need to let someone borrow your computer, you can protect your documents from their prying eyes with a simple password.

1. In the Word menu, click Preferences.
2. Select Personal Settings >> Security.
3. Password to Open or Password to Modify

“Password to Open” means the document doesn’t open without a password. “Password to Modify” lets people open and view it in read-only mode: they can’t make changes without the password.

The file will be saved with a lock on it, so you can tell it’s protected. If you select both of the above options make sure to use different passwords for opening and modifying.
