Do you ever find yourself having difficulty concentrating? Maybe you’re on deadline at work but can’t stop thinking about that pass interference call the refs missed in the NFC Championship game. Unfortunately, sports aren’t the only distractions out there.
It’s easy to drift off into an entirely different train of thought these days. Especially with technology and social media constantly at our fingertips.
Admit it, scrolling through Facebook gets you off track at least a couple times a day. But there’s good news. There’s technology now that might be able to help you focus.
Can technology help you stay focused?
Researchers at Cambridge University may have come up with a solution to a world full of distractions. They have developed a “brain training” game that is supposed to help players increase their ability to concentrate.
The game is called “Decoder” and can be found inside the Peak – Brain Training app. The game uses themes based on fun things like Indiana Jones or James Bond had has players detect sequences of numbers. You can solve missions by decoding those number sequences which are used to find clues.
The only way to win is by staying focused so you can spot the number sequences. And it appears to work.
Researchers studied the game’s impact on players concentration. Seventy-five adults between the ages of 18 and 30 took part in the study. One-third were asked play Decoder, one-third played Bingo, and the other third of the group stayed on their normal routine.
Over a 4 week stretch, study participants played Decoder for a total of 8 hours. At the end of the study, researchers say the volunteers who played Decoder had improved focus and performed better on cognitive tests than the other two groups.
If this truly helps, not only would it be good for staying focused at work but also for people dealing with brain trauma.
Cambridge Professor and Neuroscientist Barbara J. Sahakian said, “I am hoping to start studies using Decoder in people with brain injury and also in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in 2019. Both groups have problems in attention and concentration.”
