With the exact date of this year’s iPhone unveiling already in the books, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for us on Sept. 12.
Everyone seems to agree that Apple is going to release three new iPhones this year, including two of Apple’s biggest smartphones ever.
However, before you rush out and buy Apple’s latest and greatest, you may want to check your current iPhone first. It could be eligible for a replacement due to a serious flaw.
Defective iPhone 8 units
According to an official Apple advisory, a very small percentage of iPhone 8 devices “may experience unexpected restarts, frozen screens, or won’t turn on.”
The cause of the problem? The tech giant has traced the issue back to faulty logic boards that have manufacturing defects.
The affected iPhone 8 units were reportedly sold between September 2017 and March 2018 in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, and the U.S.
Thankfully, Apple will replace your affected iPhone 8 for free if you have an eligible serial number.

How to locate your iPhone’s serial number
Locating your iPhone’s serial number is easy and there are several ways of doing it.
- Open your Settings app
- Tap on General >>> About
- Look for a section called Serial Number (Note: you can long press on this number to copy it)
If your iPhone won’t turn on, sign in to your Apple ID account page on a web browser, tap or click on “Devices,” then look for the name of your iPhone then select it. Your iPhone’s serial number will be listed on this page.
If you have synced your iPhone on iTunes on a computer, you can also get gadget’s serial number in the Devices tab in iTunes Preferences.
Don’t have a computer on hand? Another way to locate the serial number of an Apple device is with its original box or receipt.
Apple’s service options
If your iPhone 8 is eligible for replacement, you have these three options to have it serviced.
- Locate an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
- Make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store.
- Contact Apple Support to arrange a mail-in service.
