We recently told you about an urgent recall on popular spray cans of cooking oil. Now, some portable speakers from ION Audio could also be putting you at risk, they might explode!
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that ION Audio is recalling 41,000 portable speakers. The recall covers four models of ION Audio’s portable speakers. There have been reports of a handful of explosions but no injuries. The company will be issuing refunds.
ION Audio is recalling the speakers voluntarily. Keep reading and we’ll let you know what’s going on and how to handle the defective speakers if you have some in your home.
Why the speakers are exploding
ION Audio said that hydrogen gas can leak from the portable speakers’ battery when charging, causing the speaker to burst, posing an explosion hazard.
Hydrogen gas becomes explosive at a concentration of 4%. This can only happen if large lead-acid batteries are charged in a sealed room or space. Experts say overcharging a lead-acid battery can produce hydrogen sulfide. The gas is colorless, very poisonous, flammable and has the odor of rotten eggs.
Ion Audio has received five reports of speakers exploding, including four incidents that resulted in property damage to the surrounding area. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled portable speakers and contact ION Audio for a refund in the form of an ION Audio gift card.
