Popular gaming controller recalled due to fire hazard

What’s going on in the world of rechargeable batteries? It seems like every day there’s news of an overheating battery somewhere – on a smartphone, electronic cigarettes, and even headphones! Imagine that.

Now, it looks like even chargers are not spared from this explosive predicament.

Performance Designed Products (PDP), known maker of third-party gaming console peripherals, has issued a recall for its Energizer branded XBOX ONE 2X Smart Chargers.

According to PDP, these battery chargers can overheat and damage the Xbox One controllers and they pose a burning hazard to consumers.

These units are easy to spot. They are made of black plastic with the item number 048-052-NA printed on the bottom and the word “Energizer” printed on their labels. They are designed to hold and charge up to two Xbox One controllers.

There are about 121,000 of these units sold in the U.S., 7,250 in Canada and 2,560 in Mexico.

So far, the company has received 24 reports of the chargers overheating and deforming its plastic cover. In six of these incidents, a burning odor has been reported.

Fortunately, there are no reported injuries caused by this defect.

These chargers were sold at brick-and-mortar stores like Best Buy and GameStop and from online retailers such as Amazon from February 2016 through February 2017 and retailed for approximately $40.

The company also makes a similar charging unit for Playstation DualShock controllers (PDP Energizer 2X Charging Station for PS4) and the Wii U (Energizer 3x Charge Station for Wii Ubut these are not part of this recall and there are no notices issued so far for these models.
