Last week, Kim posted a column titled “The real cost of cutting the cord: What streaming companies don’t want you to know,” and it caught the attention of Cord Cutters News. They called Kim’s column an “anti-cord cutting story.”
Them’s fightin’ words, as our grandparents would have said.
Our story wasn’t anti-cord cutting. Our goal is to educate our audience about myriad streaming services, devices, channels and apps that promote cutting the cord to save money. These costs add up. It’s not a zero-sum game — canceling one service and adding another. In fact, many people use cable AND streaming services together.
“Its, (sic) like saying cooking at home will cost more than Applebee’s if you buy the most expensive thing in the grocery store,” Luke Bouma writes.
Actually, Luke, it’s more like ordering off the menu at Cheesecake Factory. There are almost too many options — so many that some of us suffer analysis paralysis — and if you’re not careful, you could not only end up spending more than you budgeted, but you’ll overeat and roll out of the restaurant clutching your stomach.
We hold firm: What streaming services don’t want you to know is that the costs add up if you’re not careful. That’s why you have consumer technology advocates like Kim Komando.
