Would you believe that Netflix has been around since 1997? It has been, though back then it was a DVD sales and rental company. In fact, it was not until 2007 that Netflix ventured into streaming, and became the Netflix we know today.
Over the course of its existence, Netflix has revolutionized the streaming media industry, and can now claim about 125 million subscribers worldwide. Along with movies and TV shows the company also has its own original content, which has been received with much acclaim.
But while plenty successful, Netflix does not plan to rest on any laurels. The coming months will see some differences, some of which may go unnoticed but still have an impact on the Netflix experience.
The only constant in life is change
We know what Netflix plans to do because of a letter the company sent to its shareholders. In it, they noted the goal is to “entertain and to bring joy to people across the world through amazing stories,” which they are doing for a growing membership.
That membership, in fact, led to $3.6 billion in streaming revenue in the first quarter. According to the letter, they will spend the money wisely in order “to increase our members’ delight.”
How do they plan on doing that?
Well, one thing that probably won’t help is an increase in the price of membership. That process began late last year, with the cost of a standard two-stream HD plan rising from $9.99 to $10.99 per month for new customers. The increase has been trickling down to existing customers, too, though the cost to watch non-HD content on one screen at a time has not changed.
But what else?
Parents will have better control over the content their kids can watch
Netflix in March introduced new features that provided more information and control over viewing, including a parental PIN control for individual movies and shows. They are part of an effort to give members more tools to manage how their family uses Netflix.
You will now find Netflix as part of some Comcast bundles
In the United States, Netflix already has a partnership with T-Mobile that has led to the streaming service being available to more people. This year, they will be joining with Comcast, which will allow the cable service provider to offer Netflix as part of certain channel packages.
The idea behind the partnerships is to increase Netflix’s overall reach as well as awareness of what, exactly, it is. Of course, if you already have Netflix this won’t affect you.

More original content is on the way
More recently, Netflix has seen its profile rise due to original programming. Hits like “The Crown,” “Lost in Space,” and “Stranger Things” have made Netflix a household name! There are no intentions to cut back there, as the company signed acclaimed director Ryan Murphy.
Known for his work on “Glee,” “Nip/Tuck” and “American Horror Story,” Murphy joins Shonda Rhimes, Shawn Levy and Jenji Kohan as high-profile hit-makers who are working for Netflix. Now, instead of having to license their shows for a certain time period from other sources, Netflix will own any projects produced with them.
Netflix is in and out of the award game
As part of the letter to their shareholders, Netflix announced their movies will not be part of the Cannes film festival due to a new rule that says anything in competition cannot be watched on Netflix for the following three years. However, Netflix’s documentary “Icarus” brought home the company’s first Academy Award, which went to its creators Bryan Fogel and Dan Cogan.
