Is your laptop battery safe? You better check it now and see if it’s included in yet another massive recall that affects hundreds of thousands of laptops in the U.S.
Remember back in January of last year, HP recalled more than 150,000 laptop and mobile workstation batteries due to fire and burn-hazard concerns.
The company said that the affected batteries can overheat and melt, causing fires and burns.
But it looks like, the number of affected HP laptop and mobile workstation batteries is larger than previously thought. Read on and see if you are affected – it’s extremely critical that you check your battery immediately.
HP battery recall expansion
It looks like HP’s battery recall numbers just keep growing. From the more than 150,000 units recalled last year, the company recently added another 78,500 batteries that are affected by the issues.
The recall expansion now includes batteries for HP commercial laptops and mobile workstations sold to businesses and other organizations.
These batteries were shipped with or sold as accessories for the following models:
- HP ProBooks (64x G2 and G3 series)
- 65x G2 and G3 series, 4xx G4 series)
- HPx360 (310 G2)
- HP Pavilion x360 11inch Notebook PC
- HP 11 Notebook PC
- HP ZBook (17 G3, and Studio G3) mobile workstations
Aside from the units above, the batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for the following models:
- HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation
- HP ProBook 4xx G5 series
- HP ENVY 15
- HP Mobile Thin Clients (mt21, mt22, and mt31)
These batteries were all shipped in HP laptops and mobile workstations sold from December 2015 through April 2018 and sold separately as surplus between December 2015 and December 2018.
Since not all batteries in these models are affected, HP advises consumers to visit www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 and check if their specific battery type is included in the recall.
Why is there a recall expansion?
It is critical that you recheck your HP laptop or mobile workstation battery, even if you did so previously and were told that it was not affected.
Why? HP disclosed 8 new reports of battery packs in the U.S. “overheating, melting, or charring,” including one minor injury report and two property damage reports of around $1,100.
HP actually announced this particular recall expansion in January, but due to the U.S. government shutdown, the notice wasn’t posted by Consumer Product Safety Commission on its website until this week.
So for your safety, please double check your battery if you have any of the models included in the recall.
I have an affected battery? What do I do now?
If your laptop or mobile workstation battery is on the list, you must stop using the battery immediately. HP warns that these batteries are not customer-replaceable and these battery replacements can only be done by an authorized technician.
If you do have a battery that’s affected by the recall, call HP’s customer service line at 866-671-7362, open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central Time from Monday through Friday, for more information.

It also provides instructions on how to activate “Battery Safety Mode” so you can use your laptop or mobile workstation safely without the battery by connecting to its power adapter.
