Have you been paying attention to all of the great technology making its way into vehicles lately? Some impressive innovations include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which allow you to focus on the road while still using your gadgets’ functions in a hands-free way.
More substantial inventions include electric and self-driving vehicles. A downside to having an electric vehicle is the limited range per battery charge and the lengthy charging process. However, that is about to become a concern of the past.
Why electric vehicles are becoming more tempting
Two things that worry potential electric vehicle buyers are a lack of power and speed along with the excessive charge times for their battery. Tesla already addressed the power and speed issue with its Model S that can go from zero to 60 mph in 2.28 seconds.
Now, researchers at Purdue University have come up with an “instantly rechargeable” method that can charge an electric vehicles’ battery in virtually the same amount of time it takes to fill a car with gas. The technology uses a membraneless battery that re-energizes spent battery fluids with fluid electrolytes. This not only eliminates excessive recharge times but also cuts down on the need for numerous recharging stations.
Purdue Professor John Cushman said, “Membrane fouling can limit the number of recharge cycles and is a known contributor to many battery fires. If the battery’s components are safe enough to be stored in a family home, are stable enough to meet major production and distribution requirements and are cost effective.”
This technology could be a game-changer when it hits the market. A release date has yet to be announced.
