October is a fun month, as we really start to get into the Fall season. The weather begins to cool off, the leaves change colors and Halloween arrives at the end to cap things off.
For those of us who live in the warmer states, it is one of the first months in a long time where going outside does not sound like a terrible idea. That’s not to say we’ll spend all our time outside, since there are still plenty of fun things to do indoors.
Watching Netflix is one of them, and as always the new month will bring new options to the popular streaming service. At the same time, October will mean we part ways with some titles, too.
So whether you are eagerly anticipating the arrival of something new or are worried about missing out on a movie or show that is on the way out, the calendar’s turn means change is coming.
With that in mind, what’s arriving soon?
The Green Mile (1999)
Really, what can you say about this movie? “The Green Mile” follows the lives of guards on death row who are greatly impacted by one of the prisoners, a black man who was in there for child murder and rape but had a mysterious, amazing gift.
Based off the novel by Stephen King, the story takes place in the 1930s, and it stars Tom Hanks, David Morse, Michael Clarke Duncan, Doug Hutchison and Michael Jeter, among others. It won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture while Michael Clark Duncan earned the nod for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
The Green Mile will reach Netflix on Oct. 1.
The Neverending Story (1984)
Want a movie that will take you back? “The Neverending Story” is more than 30 years old and is the story of a troubled boy who enters a fantasy world via the pages of a mysterious book.
The movie is based on a novel written by Michael Ende, and it follows Bastian Balthazar Bux as he enters the world of Fantasia. He helps Atreyu in the search for a cure to save the Childlike Empress, all while the world is being devoured by an evil force known as “The Nothing.”
There were various other characters who joined in on the adventure, including Falkor and Morla — neither of whom are people, by the way. It starred Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Patricia Hayes, Tami Stronach, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney and Moses Gunn, and will land on Netflix Oct. 1.
Daredevil: Season 3
If you have not seen either of the first two seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil, you have missed out. Significantly better than the early 2000s movie of the same name, it is a much darker, gorier adaptation of the comic book hero.
Starring Charlie Cox as Matthew Murdock, the third season brings Daredevil back into the Marvel universe that has been created for Netflix. Thought to have [spoiler alert] died during the end of “The Defenders,” Daredevil is expected to once again take on KingPin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio) as he tries to protect Hell’s Kitchen.
Marvel’s Daredevil is not necessarily for kids, and certainly is not a show for people who cannot handle some violence and language. But if you are fine with those things and are all caught up on the Netflix Marvel universe, then you will want to start your binge on Oct. 19.
Making a Murderer: Season 2
Remember that show everyone was talking about a few years back, “Making a Murderer?” A documentary-style series, it followed Steven Avery, who spent 18 years in prison for a crime that he was wrongfully convicted of, and the subsequent trial he went through for a murder charge just a couple of years after getting released.
It also shows us what Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, went through as he was also charged in the murder based largely on a confession he made while being interrogated.
The show is back for a second season, which will detail the post-conviction process. It will feature Kathleen Zellner, Avery’s lawyer, as she tries to prove he was again wrongfully convicted.
Making a Murderer: Season 2 will be released on Oct. 19.
Other highlights
There are plenty more notable shows and movies coming to Netflix, including “V for Vendetta,” “The Shining,” “Mystic River” and “Blazing Saddles.” Also, “Billy Madison,” “Blade (both 1 and 2)” and season four of “Gotham” will begin streaming in the month.
