This year’s Super Bowl is almost here! For some people, the big game gives the best reason to spend a pretty penny on that high-end big-screen TV they’ve always wanted. Retailers know this so well so they even promote TV sales around the event. Research shows that, aside from Black Friday, the best TV discounts occur within two weeks of the Super Bowl.
For this year’s football showdown between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons on February 5 (6:30 p.m. EST), Consumer Reports rounded up the best TVs money you could buy right now.
Consumer Reports’ criteria for this selection is geared specifically for sports content – great picture quality, wide viewing angles, fast refresh rates (for less blur during fast sports-action scenes) and a good set of speakers that “convey the visceral excitement of a big hit or the roar of the crowd.”
They listed 10 but we’re narrowing it down to the five we like the best.
LG Electronics OLED65G6P Flat 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV
With its perfect blacks, amazing contrast and unlimited viewing angles, OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display technology delivers the best TV picture quality out there right now. LG is the world’s leading OLED TV maker and its flagship G6P OLED line earns top marks. This 65-inch 4K TV supports HDR including Dolby Vision content, has unlimited viewing angles, smart TV functions and exceptional sound via a Harman Kardon 4.2 soundbar that’s built into its stand. It’s not cheap, but this TV will surely impress all your friends.
LG Electronics OLED65E6P Flat 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV
A step down from LG’s flagship G6P is the E6P. It still delivers the same amazing OLED picture quality of its more expensive counterpart but for about $2,000 less. It likewise supports HDR content, wide viewing angles and smart TV functions. What’s the big difference from the G6P you may ask? The E6P lacks the rotating 4.2 Harman Karman soundbar and gets by with a 2.2 fixed speaker system instead. If the G6P’s price is too much for you, then the E6P is the next best thing you can get.
LG Electronics OLED55B6P Flat 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV
For an even cheaper OLED TV, check out LG’s OLED65E6P. It still delivers the same OLED goodness – perfect blacks, great color and contrast, unlimited viewing angles but for a fraction of the higher end models’ prices. It doesn’t skimp on the other premium features too like HDR support and smart TV functions. Its sound quality may not be as premium as its bigger brothers and its screen is “only” 55 inches but for an entry point into the world of OLED TVs, this is (relatively) a steal.
Samsung UN65KS9800 Curved 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV
Looking for a sweet curved TV instead? Samsung’s flagship Quantum Dot TV KS9800 may be the one for you. Although not an OLED TV, it’s equipped with Quantum Dot technology, Samsung’s LED LCD based answer to OLED’s picture quality. This 4K set has multizone backlighting for a bright picture and amazing black levels plus it supports premium HDR content and has a robust motion-blur detection as well.
Bonus: “Budget” sets
If all these flagship models are too expensive for you to splurge on, then consider these excellent but cheaper sets:
Samsung UN65KU6500 Curved 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV
This curved Samsung 4K TV doesn’t have Quantum Dot technology nor HDR support but for its size, it’s a great buy for about $1,300.
LG Electronics 60UH8500 60-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV
Aside from OLED TVs, LG still makes excellent LED LCD TVs too. This 4K TV has a fast effective refresh rate of 240Hz, HDR support, smart TV functions, great sound and a Magic Zoom feature. For a $1,500 TV, these features actually make it a great buy.
