August arrivals for Amazon Prime Video and HBO Now

Do your plans this weekend involve staying in and binge watching something on TV? The weather is still pretty miserable for many of us, so we wouldn’t blame you.

These days there is so very much to choose from, be it movies or TV shows. There are also many streaming options to look into, all of which offer a variety of things worth watching.

We often write about Netflix, which is definitely the most well-known of the services. But they are not the only one, with Amazon and HBO offering their own programming that will keep you busy and entertained.

What’s new there?

Just like Netflix, which sees shows arrive and leave every month, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Now regularly change their lineups. What did we get for August?

How about Hoosiers (1986)

One of the most famous sports-related movies of all time, “Hoosiers” is the tale of a small-town Indiana high school basketball team that faces incredible odds in their hopes for a state championship. The movie is loosely based off of the Milan High School basketball team that won its state championship in 1954.

Starring Gene Hackman as head coach Norman Dale and also featuring Dennis Hopper and Barbara Hershey, the Library of Congress chose “Hoosiers” for preservation in the United States Film Registry due to it being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” It arrived on Amazon Prime Video Aug. 1.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

This movie kicked off an entirely new style of horror films. Featuring a first-person look with shaky camera, it followed three student filmmakers who were hiking in the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland, trying to produce a documentary about the Blair Witch, a local legend.

The three students disappeared, but their footage was discovered and that is what makes up the movie. It stars Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard, and gained a bit of a cult following in large part due to its uniqueness.

As for HBO Now, Hard Knocks is back

Back in 2001 HBO took us deep inside an NFL organization with “Hard Knocks,” a TV series that followed the Baltimore Ravens in the season that followed their Super Bowl victory. For every NFL fan, it was a chance to pull back the curtains and get a glimpse of what life is like in the popular sports league.

This year’s edition focuses on the Cleveland Browns, who did not win a single game in 2017 but have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 Draft, Baker Mayfield, as well as other young stars to follow. Whether you are a member of the Dawg Pound or not, it is a must-watch for any football fan and will arrive on HBO Now August 7.
