How Amazon is enticing sports fans to cut the cord
A deal was announced this week between Amazon and the NFL. The online retail giant won a bidding war that allows it to stream 10 Thursday night NFL games during the upcoming season. Twitter held these streaming rights last year.
This is a huge victory for Amazon that could rake in serious ad revenue. The one-year, $50 million deal gives Amazon the right to sell two minutes of advertising, per hour, during each game. These ads are normally sold by local TV stations that carry the broadcast.
This could be a sign of things to come, with more live events streaming online. Amazon paid a hefty price to acquire the rights to Thursday night games, five times the $10 million Twitter paid last season.
The main difference between Twitter and Amazon carrying the games is who can watch the live stream. Last year, anyone could log into Twitter and watch the Thursday night NFL games for free. This season, you have to be an Amazon Prime member to watch the games online.
