You may love your smart home technology and connected devices, but research shows they are more vulnerable to attacks than devices like computers and smartphones.

When you’re relying on Wi-Fi for everything from data transmission to adjusting user settings, ambitious hackers could easily compromise your network and undermine your system — including all the connected devices.

The good news is there’s a simple way to keep all of your internet of things (IoT) devices protected and boost your Wi-Fi performance. It’s a win-win.

Install an eero mesh router system to get better coverage and create a separate virtual network to safeguard your IoT devices. Don’t know how? It’s OK, we’ll give you all the details.

What is a mesh Wi-Fi system?

Next-generation mesh routers are designed to spread a Wi-Fi network’s coverage with the use of multiple access points or satellites.

These systems usually come in sets of two or three separate units that work together to envelop your home or office with Wi-Fi coverage. As long as they’re within range of each other (about 30 to 50 feet), you can shape and customize your home or office’s Wi-Fi coverage by placing them in the appropriate rooms.

Although cheap, the downside with network extenders is they are slower than your main Wi-Fi connection. This is because they often come with a single radio transmitter that can’t send and receive data simultaneously. And the more gadgets connected to a Wi-Fi extender, the slower it is.

Compared to a network extender, a mesh router system is simple to set up and manage. Since the separate units act as a part of one system — just connect the main unit to your modem then place the other units around your home as desired — there is no separate network management or constant network jumping and reconnections.

As far as your gadgets are concerned, the Wi-Fi mesh is one big continuous Wi-Fi network, meaning your speeds won’t slow down.

When to get a mesh Wi-Fi system

For the average apartment or condo, a mesh router system can be overkill. If you’re just looking to fill a few dead spots here and there, and consistent speed is not a must, then a cheaper network extender should work.

Large houses and office spaces that require consistent network speeds will reap the benefits of a mesh Wi-Fi network immensely. It may be a more expensive system, but for its reliability, seamlessness, expandability and easy management, it’s well worth the admission price.

eero Home Wi-Fi System

The eero Home Wi-Fi System is an advanced Tri-Band Mesh router system that can replace your whole extended range Wi-Fi network, including your wireless router, range extenders and internet boosters.

It applies emerging TrueMesh technology that uses multiple access points (eero calls them Beacons) to blanket even the largest homes with fast, consistent and reliable Wi-Fi coverage.

Instead of using traditional network extenders to cover your home’s dead spots, eero Beacons are full access points you can plug into any standard outlet in your home.

With a basic eero setup, (an eero router and one Beacon) you can adequately cover a one-to-two bedroom range with consistent Wi-Fi speeds throughout.

Setup is so simple, too. Simply replace your old Wi-Fi router with the eero, then use the eero mobile app to configure the new system. All it takes is a few minutes!

How to protect your IoT devices

Some routers offer the option to create a virtual local area network (VLAN) inside a larger private network. You can use a VLAN to isolate your IoT devices and keep them protected from cybercriminals.

The reason this is important is IoT devices often expose unprotected administrative protocols to the local network. A hacker could easily break into these devices from a malware-infected computer if they are both on the same network.

Creating a VLAN for IoT devices will eliminate that risk. Setting this up is not as difficult as you might imagine, and you can do it with your eero system. Here’s how:

iOS users

  • Open the eero app and tap Settings in the bottom right corner.
  • Tap Switch Networks at the bottom of the page.
  • Tap the Add another network button at the bottom of the screen.
  • This will bring you to the Let’s get started screen, which will walk you through the setup process to create your new network.

Once you’ve set the new network up, you’ll need to know how to manage it. Here’s how:

To switch between your eero networks, tap the setting icon on the bottom right corner of the home page. Then scroll to the bottom and tap Switch Network. Once there, you can swipe left to view your additional networks and tap whichever network you’d like to view or manage.

Android users

  • Open the eero app and tap the menu button on the top left.
  • At the bottom of the list, tap Switch Network.
  • Tap the Add another network button at the bottom of the screen.
  • This will bring you to the Let’s get started screen, which will walk you through the setup process to create your new network.

Once you’ve set the new network up, you’ll need to know how to manage it.

To switch between your eero networks, tap the menu button on the top left corner of the dashboard and select Switch Network. Once there, you can swipe left to view your additional networks and tap whichever one you’d like to view or manage.

Second-generation eero

The second-generation eero Wi-Fi system is faster than the first-generation eero. The second-generation doubles the speed of the first, with the addition of a third 5Ghz radio.

The difference between the second generation eero and your current Wi-Fi extender setup will be like night and day. Wi-Fi connection speeds in each room in your home (and even from the yard, too) will be consistent with virtually no drop-offs.

Additionally, for larger homes, you can expand your Wi-Fi coverage by adding more eero Beacons to your setup.
