How many people visit your home on a daily basis? Between your spouse, your kids, your parents, the in-laws, the babysitter, housekeeper, pool guy and more, there’s always someone coming and going.

You’ve taken the right step by protecting your home with a SimpliSafe home security system. But one thing you certainly don’t want to do is hand out your security code to everyone.

The security code, or PIN number, works similarly to the PIN on your debit card. It’s how you turn off your alarm system, which makes it really difficult for the rest of the family if you keep it to yourself.

Another downside to sharing your PIN with everyone is that you can’t really tell who deactivated the alarm, and when. And, if someone did happen to steal your code, it would be nearly impossible to pinpoint who’d leaked or lost the information.

What’s the solution?

With a SimpliSafe home security system, you don’t have to worry about that problem. You can avoid this issue altogether by assigning every member of your family their own security PIN.

SimpliSafe Home Security allows up to five individual PINs, which strengthens the security of your entire system. Letting each member of your family choose their own security code makes it more likely they’ll have a PIN they’ll find easy to remember. This means they won’t have to write the code down, running the possibility of the passcode being lost or stolen.

Another advantage of these individual PINs is that you’ll know exactly who’s entering and leaving your home at all times. When someone uses their code to deactivate the alarm, you’ll receive a text alert.

As a parent, this provides peace of mind in more ways than one. Sure, you’ll know that your home is protected, but you’ll also be able to keep tabs on when your kids get home from school, or if they’ve missed the curfew you’ve set.

Create PINs whenever you need them

Imagine you’re headed out of town for a summer vacation, or to visit family members. Some hire a house sitter to take care of small tasks while they’re gone, or a pet sitter to pop in and take the dogs for a walk.

Because these aren’t people who need permanent access to your home, you don’t want to hand them the code to your security system.

Don’t give them a PIN you’d like to keep using. You can set up an extra PIN whenever you’d like, and then remove it as soon as you’re back home.

These extra PINs only allow people to disarm your alarm system. You’ll maintain control of all the other settings on your system, since the people you’ve provided with codes can’t add or remove sensors, change features, or tweak the PINs on the system.

Adding an extra PIN to your system

Setting up a new PIN is really easy. There are a few ways to do it. Anyone with an Interactive Monitoring plan can also add and remove PINs with their online account. Just log in, choose, “Alarm Settings,” enter the PINs you’d like, then choose, “Send changes to base station.”

If you don’t have an Interactive Monitoring plan, you can use the Easy Setup Wizard software on your Keychain Remote to add extra PINs.

To do this, plug the keychain remote into your computer and follow the prompts to launch the software. Enter the primary PIN for your account (also known as the Master PIN), then choose “Adjust Settings.” Within these settings, you’ll find the option to add extra PINs to your system. Once you’ve designated the PINs, select “Save Changes,” then remove the Keychain remote and insert it into the system’s base station.

For anyone who hasn’t protected their home with a 24/7 professionally monitored security system from SimpliSafe, it’s not too late. SimpliSafe offers comprehensive coverage, and it’s affordable with no long-term contracts and monitoring that only costs $14.99 per month. Having an alarm system can also save you up to 20 percent on your homeowner’s insurance.
