Podcasts — how they work, where to find them, which are best (Komando’s, of course)

In the last five years, podcasts have become increasingly popular, according to PodcastInsights, with nearly half of surveyed US households reporting to be podcast fans. And it’s no wonder why. Podcasts cover such a wide range of topics that there’s something for everyone — true crime, current events, money and finance, celebrities and, of course, consumer technology. They come in all shapes and sizes, from one-minute updates to longer, more in-depth interviews and insights.

At the most basic level, podcasts are digital audio files that you listen to online or download from the internet. What they represent is a way to keep up on news, dive deep into a topic, or learn about some bit of ephemera. They’re usually available as a series, so you can listen to individual episodes, or subscribe and follow along to a whole string of podcasts – including Komando podcasts at Podnet!

Podcasts are popular in part due to the wide variety of shows available, but they’re also a perfect accompaniment for a busy life. You can listen to a podcast at your own convenience. You can listen on a commute or a road trip. You can listen while cleaning the house or kicking back on the couch. It’s like having your own radio station where you choose the programming and you set the schedule.

Understanding podcasts

If you’re new to podcasts, there’s an easy way to get a handle on how they work. We’ll use our own Komando On Demand podcast as an example. Kim Komando offers a series of technology podcasts that cover topics ranging from the latest in breaking cybersecurity news to fascinating explorations of technology throughout history. One these podcasts is called Komando On Demand.

All of Kim’s shows are available at PodNet, so head on over and check out the page for Komando On Demand. This entertaining and informative podcast focuses on how technology touches your everyday life, with recent episodes looking at what you need to know about the coming 5G revolution and notable space happenings to watch for in 2019.

To listen to an episode in your browser, you just need to click on the episode title you’re interested in. This is a super quick and easy way to get started with podcasts, but also look up on the page for the “Subscribe” buttons. You will see options for some popular podcast streaming services, including Apple, Google and Spotify. Read on for more about how these work.

Listen to podcasts

Most people listen to podcasts by using an app on a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

For iPhones and iPads: Apple users can get going by opening the pre-installed iOS Podcasts app. To find a podcast, tap on Search and type in what you’re looking for. You can use search terms like “history,” “basketball,” or “Kim Komando.” Browse through the results and tap on a show to get more information. On the show page you can tap on an episode to start playing, or tap on the + sign to add it to your library. If you like the podcast and want to keep up with it, then tap on the Subscribe button.

If you’re using a computer, then iTunes is a convenient way to get your podcasts. You can search for podcasts just like you would for movies or music. You can also use iTunes on a Windows computer.

For Android: On your Android device, open the Google Play Music app, which works similarly to both the iOS Podcasts app and iTunes. Tap on the three bars in the upper left-hand corner and then tap on Podcasts. From here, you can browse and search for podcasts. Tap on one you’re interested in and then you can listen to individual episodes or subscribe to the series.

If you prefer to use Spotify, just open the app and search for the podcasts you want. For even more information on accessing free podcasts, check out our detailed Komando Podcasts 101 guide.
