My first job was at Target

If you think about it, I was doing live YouTube reviews in Target back in the day.

Best day to apply for a job: Data from ZipRecruiter says Tuesday (that’s today!) is the day for job seekers. Why? Most jobs are uploaded that day, and it’s your best bet to apply within the first 24 to 48 hours.

Applying for jobs but not getting any responses? Here’s how AI tools can help spot what might be holding your resume back.

🧑‍⚖️ Minding my own bid-ness: Christie’s is auctioning off some insanely rare items from the collection of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Highlights include an Apple-1 from Steve Jobs’ desk (valued up to $800,000) and a signed letter from Albert Einstein to then-President Franklin Roosevelt (worth an estimated $6 million). Full details here if you have a few million lying around.

30% decrease

In software development jobs out there. That’s compared to pre-pandemic numbers (paywall link). Tech companies have slowed hiring way down, and now AI jobs are what’s in demand. Tell anyone in college or looking for a new career.

Trivia

Steve Jobs used the “i” prefix for Apple products starting with the iMac in 1998. The “i” initially stood for “internet.” What does it mean now?

Don’t do this: Gen Zers are venting about their jobs online with hashtags like #9to5IsNotForMe. Some even include their coworkers’ names and faces. This is a one-way ticket to getting fired and scaring away future employers. If you have a teen or college kid at home, tell them to be smarter than this.

He was onto something: In a newly released clip from 1983, Steve Jobs dreamt of a machine that could generate responses based on a person’s “underlying spirit, or underlying set of principles, or any underlying way of looking at the world.” Yeah, that’s an AI chatbot. Btw, Jobs wanted to talk to Aristotle and Plato. I’d like to chat with my parents.

The rise of the restaurant robots

We’ve all heard the predictions that robots would take our jobs. Well, for fast food workers, that day has arrived.

You need to give a sheet: If your job applications go ignored, you could be applying for “ghost jobs” — listings for positions that don’t really exist. Companies use them to trick staff into thinking help is on the way or, worse, to scare them into feeling replaceable. The tip-off: These roles linger around without any updates.

Kids want to be influencers: You need to tell them about Clint Brantley (paywall link), a YouTube, TikTok and Twitch creator with over 400,000 followers. In 2023, he made less than $60,000. Shrinking platform payouts, fewer brand sponsorships, ever-shifting algorithms and that TikTok ban are sending influencers to real offline jobs.

Don’t look for a job on Facebook: An ad campaign is pushing “digital advertising” jobs. Click it, and you’ll end up with password-stealing malware on your machine. Stick with finding a real, good job on LinkedIn,folks.

#BlueCollar: That’s the hashtag Gen Z influencers are using to show young Americans that blue-collar jobs can be a goldmine. Take construction gigs, which pay newbies more than entry-level accounting jobs — and minus the student debt. They’re not giving out this knowledge just to be nice; electrician Lexis Czumak-Abreu rakes in $200,000 a year from clicks and brand deals alone.

⚠️ You can’t spell “crypto” without “cry”: A new wave of fake jobs is a front for cryptocurrency scams. Red flags: “Employers” don’t check references, they lure you with easy tasks you can do anywhere, and they pay you in crypto. They show you fake “earnings” and encourage you to invest your own money, too. After you do, they disappear — along with your money.

30 years without losing a bag

Japan’s Kansai International Airport (KIX) has gone that long without a single lost bag. Yup, officials there say they haven’t lost a customer’s bag since 1994. The workers confirm it but say it’s NBD; they’re just doing their jobs! I wish U.S. baggage handlers had the same idea — then, we wouldn’t need an AirTag in every bag!

AI has stock photographers worried (WSJ, paywall link) about their jobs. Clients now have a faster, more affordable way to find pictures of “synergy.” I’m holding on to hope … There will always be a place in my heart for photos of real people in a conference room high-fiving.

Keep it short. Only include experience relevant to the job you’re applying to. A good rule of thumb: Include only jobs you’ve held in the last 10 to 15 years, and aim to keep your resume under two pages.
