Calling all data nerds! Here's what happens in 1 minute on the internet

The internet is almost like a living organism — active and buzzing whether you’re paying attention or not. So much data is exchanged over the web every second that it can almost seem impossible to keep track of everything.

But if you thought the internet was busy before COVID-19, you won’t believe how much traffic has grown in the past several months. Tap or click here to see how heavy COVID-19 web traffic posed a threat to residential internet connections.

If you’re curious about how much information makes up the modern web, this detailed data graphic will blow your mind. Data scientists have put together a chart showing how much web data is generated every minute — and you won’t believe what websites are making the most.

The internet is alive and thriving

Ever wonder what kind of activity is buzzing around the internet at any given moment? Believe it or not, most major websites and services keep track of the amount of data passing through their servers — but it’s rare to see this information coming from more than one place at a time.

But that’s where Domo’s Data Never Sleeps infographic comes in. Domo provides analytic services that help businesses optimize their data online, and the company’s latest chart shows just how much of a juggernaut the modern web has become during the age of COVID-19.

As you can see, it’s not just a small amount of data changing hands every day on the web. Every single internet user sends and receives tons of information every day — and Domo’s infographic is only scratching the surface.

Here are a few key highlights from the findings:

  • Amazon ships 6,659 packages every minute: Think about how many goods are in motion thanks to Amazon at a time. If you really want your mind blown, just imagine how many of these packages are 2-day-or-less Prime deliveries!
  • Consumers spend $1,000,000 every minute: Online shopping is bigger than ever — and if you multiply this number, it comes out to $1,440,000,000 in a single day!
  • Netflix users stream 404,444 hours of video every minute: While this number is impressive, what’s even more mindblowing is how much data this consumes. For an individual user, an hour of video takes about 1GB of data. In 2019, Netflix accounted for nearly 13% of overall web traffic. Wow!

As you can see, there is so much more to the internet than meets the eye. It might seem like something we take for granted these days, but when you think about the sheer volume of information circulating online, you start to realize just how massive of an accomplishment our digital ecosystem is for humanity. It may very well be one of our greatest achievements in history.
