Why you’ll hate Facebook’s plans for social media

Back in October, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave us a live Oculus Rift demo. His avatar was able to travel, play games, and interact with other avatars in virtual reality.

And now you can use this new technology too. At F8, Facebook’s annual developer conference, Zuckerberg revealed Facebook Spaces, which is a new virtual reality app. It’s currently in beta; you can download it for free and purchase the VR headset. Watch the video below to see how it works.

This isn’t the only major change coming to Facebook. Have you noticed Facebook’s new camera that is very similar to Snapchat? On his Facebook page, Zuckerberg said this feature was act one. Act two is “giving developers the power to build all kinds of AR tools into the first augmented reality platform, the camera.” Developers can use Frames Studio and AR Studio to create their own designs for the Facebook camera.

Psst: Virtual and augmented reality may be the next big thing. If you need a crash course on these two futuristic technologies then watch this video.

There will also be some changes to Messenger that you may find useful. You can order food through by chatting with M, Messenger’s digital assistant. There will be some new shortcuts that allow businesses and page admins to answer questions more easily.

The most drastic change is still to come. Zuckerberg said that they are developing a “mind computer interface” or a computer that can read minds. He didn’t give too many details but job titles for the Building 8 department of Facebook include Brain-Computer Interface Engineer and Neural Imaging Engineer.

During his conference speech, Zuckerberg talked about the man who’s murder was recently posted to Facebook. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Robert Godwin Sr, we have a lot of work to do and we’ll do everything we can to help prevent these tragedies.” Make sure you don’t fall for any fundraising scams that claim to support Godwin’s family.
