Earlier this month, Microsoft halted the public rollout of the latest major update for Windows 10 named the October 2018 Update due to numerous complaints that it was deleting large chunks of user files.
A few days later, Microsoft finally confirmed that the bug affected Windows 10 users who have previously turned on a feature called “Known Folder Redirection.”
It turns out Microsoft introduced new code in the October 2018 Update that deletes empty and duplicate known folders but apparently the bug removed said folders although they still had files within them.
After its investigation, Microsoft finally resumed the Windows 10 October 2018 Update rollout (with the file deletion fixes) to members of the Windows Insider Program for further testing.
Now that it is in the hands of beta testers (once again), are there more unknown bugs being uncovered in the latest releases? Yep, you bet there are.
Read on and see the latest issues that are plaguing Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 update.
Driver compatibility bugs
Based on feedback from the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft is still scrambling to fix new bugs on the latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update while it’s testing it for general re-release.
This time, Windows Insiders are reporting various system stability issues with a number of builds and Microsoft has recently addressed these bugs with driver compatibility fixes.
Microsoft has not specified what drivers were fixed but the company did pull back buggy Intel and HP drivers from Windows 10 versions 1803 and 1809 the past week.
The Intel drivers caused audio issues while some HP drivers triggered the blue screen of death after testers updated their Windows 10 machines to the said versions.
Microsoft’s fix to address the bugs? Remove the faulty drivers from the affected machines with the latest Windows Insider build.
Other problems that were spotted in Windows 10 October 2018 Update test builds include:
- Connected Standby – Apps will sometimes freeze after resuming from Windows 10’s battery saving feature Connected Standby
- Task Manager – inaccurate CPU usage reporting in Windows 10’s Task Manager
- Third party antivirus software – undisclosed issues
- Third party virtualization software – undisclosed issues
Microsoft did not provide details about the bugs and the fixes included with the latest builds and the general re-release of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update is still up in the air at this point.
Changes to the Feedback Hub
By the way, as we reported earlier, Microsoft made changes to the Windows 10 feedback tool to give beta testers the ability to impact the severity of a reported bug.
These changes took effect in preview build 1809 which also had the fixes for the earlier file deletion bug.
Should you get the update?
As I mentioned earlier, the re-release of the October 2018 Update is not available to the general public yet.
But as you can see, Microsoft is relying on the feedback from the Windows Insider Program beta testers to determine that if it’s ready to roll out to the public again.
If you’re not a Windows Insider beta tester, I recommend that you hold off and wait for the update’s general release.
And even if the fixed version does finally get a general release, please wait a few days before applying it to sort out any system-breaking bugs that might surface.
As proven by these new bugs, Windows Insider beta builds can be unstable anyway and we don’t recommend installing them on your main computer.

Before updating, backup your data!
Nowadays, applying updates can be nerve-wracking affairs. You just never know if there are any system-breaking bugs that made it to any particular update. This is why it’s important to make sure you have a complete backup of your machine before installing any Insider build.
