When it’s time to get some sleep, sometimes our iPhones or iPads can keep us awake. Usually, it’s just checking your emails or maybe glancing at Facebook. But there’s one other thing that can keep you wired – the blue light coming from your screen.
Many studies show that exposure to bright-blue light at nighttime can affect your circadian rhythms, making it difficult to fall asleep. Typically, you want to stop using your gadgets one to two hours before hitting the sack, because the blue light it emits fools your body into thinking its daytime.
For this very reason, starting with iOS 9, Apple added a new feature called Night Shift. At a set time, Night Shift will change the color of your device’s display to the warmer side of the spectrum, making it much easier on the user’s eyes, reducing the disruptive effects of the blue tint.
At first, it might look a little odd to you but once you get used to it, you’ll be happy you’re not getting blasted by the full light coming from your screen.
How to turn on Night Shift
To schedule when Night Shift turns on, go to Settings >> Display & Brightness >> Night Shift. Here, you toggle “Scheduled” to on then set a daily schedule based on your typical sleep schedule. The best part about this is that it turns off based on this schedule so you don’t have to fiddle with your phone in the morning.
For situations where you might need Night Shift outside your set schedule, you can also manually enable this feature for the rest of the day in this same section.
Another way of activating Night Shift manually is by swiping up on the screen to open your Control Center, then tap the Night Shift section located above the Utility icons.
