You can’t delete Facebook on certain phones, and people are furious

Most of the time, you’d be happy to have your new gadget ready to go right out of the box. Having popular apps and programs already installed can be a huge time-saver.

But what if your new smartphone has apps pre-installed that you’re never going to use? You might just consider it a minor annoyance. Unless of course one of those apps turns out to be a privacy nightmare.

That’s actually happening right now with some popular smartphones and the Facebook app. And what’s really ticking people off is they can’t delete it.

Why can’t you delete the Facebook app?

If you have a Samsung device, there’s a good chance that you won’t be able to delete the Facebook app. That’s because a couple years ago, Samsung made a deal with Facebook to pre-install the app on some of its smartphones.

At the time, both companies said doing this would benefit customers. Having a pre-installed mobile version of Facebook supposedly runs smoother and provides a better user experience than the version found in app stores.

The Facebook app isn’t the only one that shows up on certain gadgets by default. Some devices have apps by Amazon, YouTube and Twitter pre-installed also.

But Facebook is the one that’s been caught breaching its members’ privacy recently. Between the Cambridge Analytica scandal and having 50 million accounts taken over by hackers recently, people have been thinking about leaving Facebook altogether.

Which is why some people with Samsung phones are outraged and have started posting angry comments on other social media platforms.

One frustrated Samsung Galaxy S8 owner told Bloomberg, “It just absolutely baffles me that if I wanted to completely get rid of Facebook that it essentially would still be on my phone, which brings up more questions. Can they still track your information, your location, or whatever else you do?”

That’s a good question and according to Facebook, there’s a way to make sure it doesn’t. If you have a Samsung phone with Facebook pre-installed, you can’t delete it but you can disable it.

Steps to disable the Facebook app

A Facebook spokesperson said that if you disable the app, it acts like it’s been deleted. Supposedly it will stop collecting data and sending information back to the Facebook app.

Now Facebook has made claims in the past that have turned out to be false, but if you believe disabling the app will protect your privacy here’s how to do it:

  • Open your device Settings
  • Tap the Apps section
  • Tap “Disable

As you can see, it’s a very simple process to disable an app. Let’s just hope it actually stops it from tracking you.

If you want to delete your Facebook account altogether, here’s how.
