There always seems to be a toy or video game in the news that has gone viral. Who could forget the Cabbage Patch Kids craze that swept the nation in the early 1980s?
A more recent example is Pokémon Go. It was just a couple years ago that players were out scouring the world looking for digital characters like Pikachu and Machoke. Games like this are typically harmless and fun for kids to play.
However, the most popular game making the rounds now might actually be harmful to children. If you have kids or grand-kids you really need to know what’s going on. Are your kids playing this popular game?
I’m talking about a game called Fortnite Battle Royale. It was released in September 2017, is free to play on PC, Mac, smartphones, tablets and has taken off like crazy. There are over 3.4 million playing the game across the globe.
The game includes both voice and text chat features. This is the problem.
Pedophiles are taking advantage of the fact that people from all over the world can connect through the game on voice chat. There have been numerous reports of pedophiles trying to speak with young children through the game.
One mother told police that her 12-year-old son, who was playing Fortnite, was offered money by someone on voice chat to perform a sex act. Scary!
It’s become such a problem that the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the U.K. has issued a stern warning to parents about Fortnite. It is urging parents to talk to their kids and monitor their gameplay.
But talking isn’t enough. As a parent or grandparent, keeping kids safe is priority number one. That’s why you need to disable the voice chat feature in the game. Keep reading to find out how.
Disabling Fortnite’s voice chat feature
To be safe, it’s best to turn off the voice chat feature in Fortnite. It’s a pretty simple process. Here’s how:
Open the Settings menu and tap Audio on the bar across the top of the page.
You will see a Voice Chat option. Simple select “Off” next to it.
That’s it, the voice chat feature is now off. As long as your children leave it off, it should be safe to play.
