How many times has your dinnertime been ruined by an irritating phone call from someone trying to sell you something? Or worse, scaring you into giving them money? Many, many times.
You may have received frightening calls from people pretending to be the IRS. They scream at you and demand money or “you’re going to jail.” Sometimes these robocalls, where computers dial phone numbers, are supposedly from your credit card company, your bank or a charity. Most times, they’re scams and you should immediately hang up.
Despite the FCC’s do-not-call list, where you can block unwanted calls, there are 2.4 billion robocalls made to people like you every month. More than one of out 10 people have been victims of these calls.

Now, the FCC is proposing a new strategy to block more robocalls. Here’s how it’ll work.
Many times, you may notice that the phone number on your caller ID doesn’t make sense. It may say it’s coming from your town, but with the wrong area code. Or it may be a jumble of numbers that look like it’s coming from another country. Or it may say, “directory assistance.”
Will it work?
The FCC’s proposal is to allow phone companies like AT&T to block phone calls originating from unregistered phone numbers. It’s not clear yet how many calls out of the 2.4 billion will be blocked this way.
Yet, it’s comforting to know that the FCC recognizes the problem and is doing something about it. The FCC wants to hear your thoughts on this.
