Do you agree with how this police department is using drones?

The world can be a scary place. Incidents like the mass shooting in Las Vegas have left many fearful of being at public events. Can you blame them?

The gunman fired into the crowd for several minutes before law enforcement was able to find his location. Situations like this have police departments across the U.S. looking for ways to provide better security. But, this controversial security technique has some people crying foul.

How do you feel about police drones?

We’re talking about the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Earlier this week, a civilian oversight panel approved a yearlong testing period for drones to be used by the LAPD. It’s now the largest police department in the U.S. to utilize this controversial technology.

The vote led to an immediate backlash by protesters. Those who are opposed are afraid that the drones will eventually be misused and turned into a Big Brother type situation. However, advocates believe camera-mounted drones will help protect officers by gathering crucial information during high-risk scenarios without risking their safety.

LAPD officials have tried to calm the fears of the opposition. They are promising to follow restrictions that prohibit weapons and facial-recognition technology from being implemented. There will also be strong oversight of the program, limiting when drones can be used.

The LAPD’s Union President Craig Lally said, “Whether it’s an active shooter at school, or a suspect barricaded in a home in a Los Angeles neighborhood, this technology will help us save lives. It’s a tool that will protect both police officers and residents.”

What do you think, would you be OK with police in your city using drones? Some believe losing privacy in the name of safety is a fair trade-off, do you? Leave a comment and tell us your thoughts on the issue.
