While EVs won’t get recalled for something like a faulty fuel pump, it doesn’t mean they’re immune. More than a million Teslas are being recalled for violating federal safety standards for power windows. Have a Tesla? You’ll want to check this out.

Tesla owners feel the pinch

The NHTSA is issuing a recall for 1,096,762 Tesla vehicles for faulty power windows. The automatic reversal system, or pinch detection, is supposed to stop the window from rolling up when there’s an obstruction in the way (such as your fingers).

The NHTSA wrote in a letter to Tesla that the defect poses an injury risk, which led to the safety recall.

Here are the Tesla models impacted by the recall:

  • 2017-2022 Tesla Model 3.
  • 2021-2022 Tesla Model S.
  • 2021-2022 Tesla Model X.
  • 2020-2022 Tesla Model Y.

Vehicles in production as of Sept. 13 already got the update, and Tesla had not received any reports of injuries as of Sept. 16.

To fix the problem, Tesla will deploy an over-the-air (OTA) firmware update to affected vehicles. Owners will be notified by mail starting Nov. 15. In the meantime, please be extra careful when closing your windows, especially if you have children in the car.

If you have any questions or concerns, call Tesla at 650-681-5000 or go to tesla.com/contact and fill out the contact form.
