Walmart to offer voice-assisted grocery shopping with Google’s help

Walmart started off as Walton’s Five and Dime, a humble store in rural Arkansas. Amazon started as a quaint online bookstore based in Seattle. My, how things have changed!

Today, both retail titans are battling to become the largest stores in the world. It seems whenever one of the companies fires a shot by trying something new, the other fires back with its own version.

One big advantage Amazon has held with the ordering process is Alexa. Welp, here comes Walmart’s counterpunch.

Order from Walmart with just your voice

Walmart announced this week that it will soon be offering a new service to make shopping easier. It’s called Walmart Voice Order.

The company is partnering with Google to give customers voice ordering capabilities. You just need a device that has Google Assistant.

Then, simply say, “Hey Google, talk to Walmart.” The Google Assistant will add items you select directly to your Walmart Grocery cart.

And the more you use the feature, the smarter it gets. That’s because it uses information from your prior purchases to help identify what you’re looking for.

So if you’ve ordered milk from Walmart in the past, just saying, “Add milk to my cart” will be enough.

The program will know the specific type of milk that you purchase regularly. Instead of saying “one gallon of 1 percent Lucerne milk,” just say the word “milk” and it will understand.

Available devices with Walmart Voice Order capabilities:

If you want to check out Walmart Voice Order, you’ll need one of the following devices:

  • Android 6.0+ watches
  • Android 6.0+ TVs
  • Android 6.0+ tablets
  • Google Home
  • Android 5.0+ phones
  • iOS 10.0+ devices
  • Chromebooks

Any of the gadgets on the above list will work with the new service. The service will roll out over the next few weeks.

What do you think, would you order groceries like this? I know many people who would prefer walking up and down each aisle at the grocery store so they can hand-pick their own produce and other items. It’s quite possible neither shopping giant will win this battle.
