Amazon Alexa outage causes problems for disgruntled users

The lights won’t turn on. The music won’t play. The thermostat won’t warm the house. No, your power isn’t out. Your voice commands aren’t working. Alexa is down. *Dun Dun Duuunnn*

You keep giving Alexa commands but she doesn’t respond. Your Amazon device lights up but nothing happens. How will you go on?

Late last night, many Alexa owners had issues with their digital assistant. According to Down Detector, a service that reports outages in real time, up to 878 people reported issues between 11:00 and midnight EST. Many Alexa owners took to Twitter to voice their frustrations or ask if anyone else was experiencing similar issues.

Some people were quite concerned. Or possibly joking?

While others critiqued smart homes and connected devices.

Amazon released a statement about the issue. “This evening [US time] we had an issue that impacted some Alexa customers’ ability to interact with the service. The Alexa service is now operating normally.” Whatever the issue was, it seems to be fixed now. And it didn’t affect as many people as the typo that caused an internet outage that hit multiple popular sites.

And just like that, it was over. It seems everyone survived the Alexa outage of 2017 unscathed. But the situation does bring up an important question. What happens when a system that all of your devices rely on fails? At this point, the worse case scenario is manually operating and resetting your devices. Mild inconveniences at best.

In other Alexa news, rumor has it that there will be a new Amazon device enabled with the digital assistant that allows owners to make phone calls. According to Recode, these new devices will work like intercoms that allow to people with Alexa devices to communicate through the speakers. Not many details are available yet but we will keep you posted.
