A big name in electronics is going after Amazon with free next-day delivery

When Amazon strode onto the scene, retail stores that specialized in computers and electronics began falling like dominoes — except for one. It hasn’t just hung on, it’s also become strong.

Not that it was easy. Just nine years ago the company was bleeding cash and on the brink of collapse. A new CEO turned things around by engaging employees and customers and working under the philosophy that it could coexist with Amazon. Click here to learn how Walmart is cutting into this company’s turf.

That philosophy will be tested soon as the company begins offering same-day delivery. Now it’s stepping into Amazon’s court.

And you don’t have to be a Prime member

Best Buy has picked up the next-day delivery gauntlet from Amazon as it prepares for the Black Friday onslaught. The retailer says it is implementing free next-day shipping to “99% of its customers.”

If you can’t wait until the next day to get your purchase, you can get it the same day in some areas by paying an extra fee.

As you shop Best Buy online, you’re going to have to keep a few things in mind: First, you have to make sure the product supports next-day shipping. You’ll be able to find that information directly above the yellow “Add to Cart” button.

Also, you must spend at least $35 to get free next-day delivery. Currently, the next-day delivery program isn’t available everywhere. Before you start ordering, enter your zip code to see if you’re in an eligible area.

Currently, the company has a free same-day pickup program, which is extremely convenient. If there is a Best Buy on your work commute, you can select that store to pick up your item without going out of your way!

Amazon’s reaction

Amazon will likely not blink an eye at Best Buy’s latest move. That’s because it’s chasing bigger game — Walmart.

The retailing giant announced two programs this week to make shopping on Amazon more convenient: first, if you’re an Amazon Prime member you can get free one-day shipping on $1 items. This is great for Prime members, but it will likely put a strain on Amazon. After all, finding the item at a distribution center, packing it and delivering it will far outweigh the cost of the item.

In short, this could end up eating away at Amazon’s bottom line — but it could also be a short-term calculated risk. If such a tactic hurts smaller rivals, the losses may be worth it in exchange for Amazon extending its retail footprint in important markets. Click here to read more Amazon’s $1 item delivery.

Amazon also expanded its Counter service. Counter is a network of staffed pickup points that allow customers to pick up their Amazon packages in-store at partner locations.

Starting with Rite Aid in June, Amazon has now added partners GNC, Health Mart and Stage Stores. Delivery to a Counter location is available to all Amazon customers at no extra cost and it works with same-day, one-day, two-day and standard shipping. Click here to learn more about the Counter program.
