What is the purpose of new technology if not to help make our lives better? Some of it makes life easier, while there are certainly aspects that help keep us safe or live a healthier lifestyle.
Helpful tech can be pretty expensive, but it does not have to be. Whether the cost is worth it or not depends on what you want and how badly you need it.
The challenge really is deciding what kind of life-helping tech you could use. Maybe you have something in mind, but it’s also possible you don’t even know what you need exists.
So, it is with that in mind we have created this list of helpful tech — all of which can be found on Amazon — that you may want to check out. Some of it is smart, but all of it will make your life better.
Make your outlets smarter
You’ve heard of smart devices, sure, and at times may even roll your eyes over what kind of tech has earned the label. But did you ever realize your outlets could be smarter?
These EFUN SH33OW mini smart outlets require no hub and will work with Alexa or Google Assistant for voice control. Whatever appliance is plugged in, you can control it with the sound of your voice.
These outlets come with overload protection and are made of fireproof material, so you can feel safe using them. They can also be controlled from anywhere by using an app, and offer device-sharing functionality so multiple people can control them.
Let the vacuum do all the work
Some people enjoy cleaning up their home, but most of us see it as a chore that is tedious but must be done. Until Rosie the Robot Maid is invented, the closest thing we’ll get is a vacuum that does not need us pushing it around.
Enter the iRobot Roomba, which has Wi-Fi connectivity, will work with Alexa and can handle carpets as well as hard floors. New models are coming out all the time, and this one — the 690 — has a 3-stage cleaning system and dual multi-surface brushes to pick up everything, small or large.
It has a host of intelligent sensors, including some for dirt detection that will alert the Roomba to work harder on concentrated areas of dirt. It can navigate around and under furniture, and will run for up to 90 minutes before automatically returning to its dock to charge.
Be mindful of your eggs
Have any of us not bought eggs, kind of forgotten about them and then wondered if they were still good? The listed expiration date is not exactly set in stone, and it’s kind of a pain to do the trick where we put them inside a bowl filled with water to see if they float.
With the Quirky Egg Minder, you will never have to worry about that or if you even have enough eggs to do what you need. It syncs with your smartphone to tell you how many eggs are left as well as when they are going bad.
The Egg Minder has in-tray LED lights that will indicate which egg is your oldest, and you can have it set to send you push notifications for when you are running low.
Your frying can be healthier
Fried food is delicious, but when we eat it we understand it is not necessarily the most healthy of things to consume. It really doesn’t matter what we have, as the oils necessary for frying make things delicious yet bad for us.
A great way to get around this is with an air fryer, such as the GoWISE USA 5.8 Quarts 8-in-1 Electric Air Fryer XL. It allows you to fry, bake, grill and roast with either minimal or even no oil.
This fryer has a modern look with an advanced touch-screen menu, and its start/stop button lets you change the time and temperature in the middle of the cook cycle. It comes with a non-stick certified and PFOA-free pan and detachable basket that is equipped with a cool-touch handle and button guard to prevent accidental detachment.
And in case you aren’t sure what to make with it, you will get a recipe book with 50 recipes that are specifically made for GoWISE USA Air Fryers.
Let your assistant take care of tasks
What good are some smart appliances if you don’t have the device that can help control them? There are plenty to choose from, but an Amazon Echo is never a bad choice.
Here we have the 2nd-Generation Echo Plus. Now, it’s technically not out — yet — as it will be released on October 11, 2018. But it should be worth the wait. It features improved premium speakers powered by Dolby Play 360 audio, with sharp vocals and dynamic bass.
You can adjust the speaker with voice commands, which is nice. But it also operates as a traditional Echo, as you can ask Alexa to play music, answer questions, read news, check the weather and perform many other tasks.
Echo Plus also has a built-in temperature sensor, and can call or message almost anyone hands-free. It has seven microphones and will be able to hear you from any direction, even while music is playing.

Use the Quirky Power Plug to extend hard-to-reach outlets in tight spaces. This 8-inch cord is something you have always needed but didn’t know it yet. It allows you to plug those big boxy power cords into it without taking up several spaces on a surge protector. Or use it in tight spaces to be able to reach the outlet. It plugs into itself for convenient and safe storage.
