Who has the fastest broadband speed in your city?

Who has the fastest broadband speed in your city?

How fast is your internet? Or maybe a better question is, how slow is it?

With all the advances in technology, internet speeds can feel frustratingly sluggish. But we’ve got good news: We know which providers on fixed internet and mobile internet have the fastest download and upload speeds in your neck of the woods.

That’s thanks to Ookla, a crowdsourced initiative that continually measures the speed of internet connections. Their results are both encouraging and somewhat disappointing.

First, the not-so-great news. The United States overall continues to lag other countries: The U.S. ranks No. 15 among all countries for download speeds and 24th for upload speeds. For mobile, it’s No. 44 for download speeds and No. 65 for uploads.

The great news is that internet speeds are getting a lot faster. Mobile download speeds in the first half of 2017 are up 19.2 percent over last year. Fixed-line speeds are also rising (see image below).

Fixed Speeds

(Source: https://www.speedtest.net/reports/united-states/#fixed)

The United States, of course, is a massive country in terms of size. That’s why smaller countries often have faster speeds. It’s easier to install the needed infrastructure in a tiny space than it is over vast swaths of farmland, suburbs and cities.

So, speeds vary quite a bit depending on where you live and which internet providers you use. So, how do your city and provider rank?

Superfast Internet Speeds

Internet speeds are getting faster in almost all parts of the country, according to Ookla’s most recent measurement. But you care about speeds where you live, right?

Fortunately, internet providers are laying down the infrastructure needed to provide faster, more affordable connections. For instance, Verizon FiOS now offers a gigabit package for $69.

But, when it comes to fixed-line speeds, Xfinity has Ookla’s highest score. (See below.)
