Now a new streaming service is on the way and all your friends will be there. Even better, there is a way for you to watch for free.
It’s not TV… it’s HBO
Last year, AT&T acquired Time Warner and now owns HBO, Turner Broadcasting Systems, CNN and Warner Brothers Studio. HBO operates HBO Go and HBO Now (don’t forget AT&T TV Now).
HBO Go is an online service for consumers who have HBO through their cable or satellite provider, while HBO Now is available to people to buy the service directly from HBO. The two services are run from two separate apps.

How to get HBO Max for free
A few months ago, WarnerMedia announced it’ll be launching another streaming service called HBO Max in the spring of 2020. In a nice surprise announcement, the company said AT&T customers who already subscribe to HBO will have free access to HBO Max.
AT&T COO John Stankey told Reuters there are potentially three ways to get HBO Max for free. Here’s how:
- If you are a subscriber to DirecTV.
- If you are a subscriber to AT&T TV Now.
- Select AT&T wireless plans may also include HBO Max at no extra charge.

What you get with HBO Max
HBO Max will be a combination of HBO content along with tons of original programming from Warner Brothers, DC Entertainment, TNT, TBS, Turner Classic Movies and more. One of the biggest draws to the platform will be the iconic “Friends” series.
Last year, Netflix paid an astounding $100 million to stream one of its most popular shows, “Friends,” through 2019. That comes to an end in 2020 when “Friends” migrates to HBO Max.
So, besides all 236 episodes of “Friends,” what else will HBO Max be streaming? One popular oldie but goodie is “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” starring Will Smith. It will also have original films and programs, such as a couple of horror series from the likes of Jordan Peele and Stephen King.

Reese Witherspoon’s company will also produce two films for HBO Max. Other original shows will star “Pitch Perfect’s” Anna Kendrick and “The Big Bang Theory” alum Kaley Cuoco. The CW’s upcoming “Batwoman” will stream exclusively on HBO Max, along with many of the networks’ other shows.
Pricing for HBO Max hasn’t been announced yet, but if you have one of the qualifying services you won’t have to worry about price at first, since you’ll be qualified to receive it free.
