Creepy Facebook database collects everything you do on the site, here’s how to get yours
The thing about Facebook is that in using it, we provide the social media site with a lot of information about us. Photos, relationships, status updates, messages — we’re always giving the site something.
Most of us don’t put too much thought into it because we like the benefits the site provides us. We can keep up with family and friends, share important moments in our lives and get news updates if we so desire. And who doesn’t like when those great Facebook memories pop up?
But at the same time, it’s a little disconcerting knowing that Facebook knows as much about you, if not more, than your closest friends, even if you did willingly hand over all the information.
Download your Facebook file
While you may feel uncomfortable over the idea that Facebook has a stored history of pretty much everything you have ever done on the site, it should at least be a little comforting knowing that they aren’t really trying to hide the fact that they have done it. Though it is not broadcast or put in big, bold, flashing letters on the site, there is a way to download your file to see what exactly they have.
If you want to see your file, follow these easy steps:
1.Log into your Facebook account.
2. Click on “Settings” (To get to settings, click the down arrow on the upper right corner of the screen)
3. Click “General”
3. Click the link that says “Download a copy of your Facebook data”
Facebook will ask you to confirm your identity one more time, and then, after a bit of time will send you an alert saying your download is ready to go. At that point, downloading the ZIP file will commence. Once you have it, you can open it up and see a treasure trove of information.
In the “HTML” folder you will find all sorts of goodies, like your events, friends (added, declined, offered, removed), pokes, messages, photos, videos and timeline notes. The “messages” folder is pretty self-explanatory, with the same going for “photos” and “videos.” If you have ever bought anything on Facebook then your credit card information will also be present, as are IP addresses, phone numbers and facial recognition data.
In short, pretty much everything you have ever done on Facebook is in the file, which is both horrifying and kind of cool.
